Charles Kennedy, who was found dead at his home yesterday, was not just one of the most-respected politicians – he was also one of the coolest.

Tributes have been pouring in for the former leader of the Liberal Democrats and as well as the heartfelt messages, some people have been highlighting just how cool he was.

Phil Lucas shared a letter on Twitter that the 55-year-old sent to him, after asking Mr Kennedy who his favourite member of the Muppets was.

Saying he was sorry for the late reply, Mr Kennedy answered the question – having a cheeky dig at the Conservative party in the process.

He wrote: “I would like to say that my favourite muppet is Gonzo. “Even though he is blue, he is a nice guy.”

The former MP was also popular in television circles for his warmly-received appearances on numerous TV shows.

Dubbed ‘Chatshow Charlie’, Mr Kennedy regularly appeared on shows like Have I Got News For You, and was always a hit with audiences and members of the panel.

And shrugging off the traditional ‘stuffy politician’ tag, he even agreed to appear alongside Shane Richie in an EastEnders Christmas special in 2004.

But he also gained respect in politics for standing firm to his beliefs in opposing both the Iraq War and the Coalition with the Tories.

Mr Kennedy lost his seat to the SNP in last month’s General Election after 32 years service as an MP.
