Protesters Gather Outside US Embassy in Yangon Following Myanmar Coup

Protesters gathered outside the US Embassy in Yangon, Myanmar, on Tuesday, February 9, as demonstrations against a military takeover showed no signs of abating, local media reported.

Myanmar’s armed forces launched a coup on February 1, detaining Aung San Suu Kyi and aides, and announced a yearlong state of emergency. Senior Gen Min Aung Hlaing emerged atop the new military government.

Despite threats and efforts to clamp down on social media access, protests that began soon after the coup have continued into a second week. Large groups of demonstrators were reported in Yangon on Monday and Tuesday.
