Protesters Gather as Turkish President Erdogan Visits the White House

Demonstrators gathered close to the White House on November 13 as President Donald Trump held a meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Mark Satter, a reporter with student publication Medill on the Hill, shared this footage of protesters demonstrating against Erdogan’s visit. It was Erdogan’s first trip to the US since a Turkish-backed incursion in northern Syria began in October, following an announced US withdrawal from the area.

As well as discussing the operation in Syria, Trump and Erdogan were scheduled to talk about Turkey’s decision to purchase a Russian air defense system despite Ankara’s membership in the NATO alliance.

During a press conference at the White House, Trump said he and Erdogan are “good friends” and spoke about expanding trade between the two countries.
