Protesters Light Flares in Central Paris Amid Nationwide Labor Strikes

Demonstrators gathered in France’s capital into the night on Thursday, January 19, amid nationwide protests against President Emmanuel Macron’s contested pension reform, which would raise the retirement age from 62 to 64, the interior ministry said.

This footage was captured by Maud Audouin, who said she took it between Place de la Bastille and Place de la Republique in central Paris on Thursday night.

Similar protests were seen in cities including Lyon, Marseille, Rennes and Nantes throughout Thursday.

On Thursday evening, French Minister of the Interior Gerald Darmanin said that the protests were a “fundamental right” of the people, but said it was the priority of the police to ensure they took place as safely as possible. Credit: Maud Audouin via Storyful
