Demonstrators gathered in Washington to rally in opposition to the nomination of Judge Amy Coney Barrett to the US Supreme Court as the Senate Judiciary Committee began four days of confirmation hearings on Monday, October 12.
Footage posted by Samy Nemir-Olivares shows a rally close to the US Supreme Court that was organized by several groups, including the Center for Popular Democracy Action. The crowd is heard chanting “No confirmation before inauguration” and holding signs that read, “Save the ACA,” in reference to the Affordable Care Act, which was expected to take center stage at the hearings.
The Supreme Court is due to hear arguments on whether the Affordable Care Act is constitutional in November, and is expected to rule on the matter before its term ends.
Protesters calling on senators to reject the confirmation were arrested outside the Hart Senate Office Building after holding a sit-in, according to the Washington Post. Crowds also gathered in support of Amy Coney Barrett, chanting, “Fill that seat” outside the same building. Credit: Samy Nemir-Olivares via Storyful
