Protests Erupt For Second Straight Day in Belarus as Strike Action Begins

Hundreds of protesters took to the streets of Minsk, Belarus, on October 26, in response to calls by opposition leader Svetlana Tikhanovskaya for nationwide strike action if President Alexander Lukashenko had not resigned by October 25.

This footage, shared by local news outlet Onliner.by, shows students marching in the city and security forces attempting to disperse crowds.

Local media reported that some workers were detained and around 100 people gathered at a checkpoint for the state-owned chemical plant, Grodno Azot, as part of the strike.

The protests followed a number of demands made by Tikhanovskaya, who called for nationwide action if they were not met.

The demands included Lukashenko’s resignation, an end to police use of force and a release of all political prisoners, reports said. Credit: Onliner.by via Storyful
