Provocateur Hotel, Berlin - hotel review

Provocateur Hotel, Berlin
Provocateur Hotel, Berlin

Berlin is bursting with rich history, museums and nightlife. Thriving with contemporary art, hipster bars, and street food fairs, the German capital keeps any culture-enthused tourist busy around the clock.

Provocateur Hotel fits in with the magical madness of the city effortlessly. The hotel takes inspiration from burlesque, which is so Berlin, and there’s a glamorous 1920s Parisian feel – you’ll feel like one of Hemingway's entourage as you listen to Billie Holiday in the hotel bar.

Where is it?

The hotel is located in the west of the city, which is more laid-back and leafy than the east of Berlin. It isn’t among the trendy coffee shops and cafes that have sprouted up across the east of the city, but the famous Kurfürstendamm shopping street – the Mayfair of Berlin – with luxury shops such as Louis Vuitton, Cartier, and Dolce and Gabbana, is a five-minute walk away.

Style

Roaring twenties style and a beguiling sense of wonder, make this charming design hotel stand out. Amsterdam-based Saar Zafrir designed it with bold colours – blood-red and deep-blue accompany gold and black and extend throughout the hotel – coupled with sensual velvet and vintage furnishings that he found in antique fairs. There’s even a gold-clad guest lift from 1912.

Facilities

The hotel is modest in its facilities. There is no spa or pool, but it is rich in elegance and service. There’s a secluded, secret terrace where you can have a quiet afternoon tea, or evening cocktail, and the bar and restaurant are first-rate.

Food and drink

The restaurant offers Chinese-French fusion cuisine, which is also popular among well-heeled locals.

Delicious cocktails are served at the bar, which gets busy on weekend evenings, with DJs playing and enticing Berlin’s party crowd.

Breakfast is à la carte and offers healthy and indulgent options such as avocado on bread or scrambled eggs and caviar, but there’s also a 'hangover breakfast'; a cigarette, coffee and a vodka shot.

Extra curricular

The hotel is in a great location to discover the charms of the west of Berlin. The nearby area of Bergmannkiez is particularly beautiful with Parisian-like cobblestone roads and chic cafés. The hotel is also a one minute walk from the Konstanzerstrasse U-Bahn, and you can get into various city-centre locations in 20 minutes, while a trip to the Reichstag will take about half an hour.

Which room?

The 58-room hotel is split into different categories from 'petite' to 'de luxe', with two suites. All rooms come with rich, plush interiors, but get bigger in size. The bathrooms are all similarly spacious with rain showers, but the larger rooms also have free-standing pearl-shaped bathtubs in the bedrooms. To get totally carried away in the sexy atmosphere, each room has a 'provocateur mode'; the setting plays music and a movie filmed around the hotel by photographer Kai Stuht.

Best for

The bewitching 1920s hotel is sophisticated and sexy. It’s perfect for couples looking for luxurious 'lost weekends'.
