Yahoo News Prue Leith given 24-hour security after Bake Off news
Replacing a national treasure on the nation's favourite TV show is never going to be an easy transition, which is something new Bake Off judge Prue Leith has learned the hard way.
The forthcoming Great British Bake Off judge has revealed she has been given 24-hour security following the announcement she will be replacing Mary Berry on the series, earlier this month.
Prue revealed she has been been given full-time protection by "coppers" to protect her from threats, so much so that her agent was actually shocked by the extreme security measures provided by the series' new distributor Channel 4 and production company Love Productions.
"On the day that they announced who the line-up was, they wanted to send a close protection officer," Prue told the Sun.
"I said, 'Don't be ridiculous, we absolutely do not need a copper standing there looking.'
"But they said, 'No, no, no, we really must just to be on the safe side.'
"What did they think is going to happen? I'm not likely to be trolled. This is a nice family show."
The 77-year-old also said she initially turned down the offer of extra security, but the TV companies insisted on it.
"When I got home that night at 11 at night, there's a chap in a van, a security guard," she added.
"They sent somebody down to the country to look after me."
Earlier this month, the full presenting line-up for Channel 4's version of Bake Off was announced.
