In a bid to cash in on the anticipation around the upcoming PlayStation 5 Pro, Sony is offering limited-time discounts on its regular PS5 consoles and bundles.

After all, not everyone can justify spending £700 on the Pro model, even if tech enthusiasts are raving about its upgraded graphics and smooth gameplay.

Then there’s the fact that around 60 million PlayStation users, or half of the system’s entire user base, are still on the last-gen PS4.

Put off by initial stock shortages and the high price of games, many players simply haven’t made the jump to the PS5, despite the console being available for four years.

How much is a PS5?

To convince more gamers to upgrade, Sony has cut the cost of both the digital and disc editions of the PS5 slim consoles, along with bundles that throw in an extra controller so you can play with a mate.

The prices for the hardware are as follows on the PlayStation Direct store:

  • PS5 digital edition - £339.99 (previously £389.99)

  • PS5 digital edition with two DualSense pads - £389.99 (previously £439.99)

  • PS5 disc edition - £429.99 (previously £479.99)

  • PS5 disc edition with two DualSense pads - £479.99 (previously £529.99).

All told, the markdowns are slightly higher than the ones Sony introduced in May. However, the discounts are only valid until 10.59pm on the night of Monday, October 14, after which they’ll revert to their original prices. So, now might be a good time to buy the consoles for Christmas.

Best PS5 games of 2024

Now’s a great time to join the PlayStation fold thanks to a crop of excellent releases. Some of the best reviewed games of the year are PS5 exclusives, among them the fiendishly challenging platformer Astro Bot, the epic RPG sequel Final Fantasy 7: Rebirth, and the bug-killing multiplayer shooter Helldivers 2.

A raft of exciting games are also slated for next year, including Ghost of Yotei, Hell is Us, and ArcheAge Chronicles.

Of course, there’s nothing stopping you from going full hog and buying the PS5 Pro, which is still available to pre-order directly from the PlayStation Direct store, and will be sold through additional retailers from tomorrow (October 10).

That’s also when you’ll be able to snag the limited edition PS5 30th anniversary collection collection console again. Sony had gamers salivating over the model’s throwback, PS1-style design when it unveiled it last month – and it was quickly snapped up during the first round of pre-orders recently.
