PS5 stock UK - live: Game set to restock next week – how to get the console

Update: The PS5 sells out at Box. It could drop at ShopTo today. Read on for more information.

The PS5 launched in November 2020, but supply problems and a global chip shortage have slowed the production of Sony’s next-generation console to a crawl. New stock is tricky to find, and when it does appear the PS5 sells out in the blink of an eye.

August was one of the best months ever for PS5 restocks, seeing multiple drops at Very, Smyths Toys, BT and EE, as well as availability at Argos, Amazon and Game. There were around 35 drops in total. This month has already been impressive though, with drops at AO.com, Ace Studio and ShopTo and Currys PC World all in the first week. We’ve also seen stock at BT and Smyths Toys, and earlier this week, we had some hefty drops at Game, Very and Argos. Could we get any drops today to round off the week?

If you’re still on the lookout for a PS5, you’ve come to the right place. Our liveblog is on hand to give you the latest insight on Playstation 5 restocks from all major UK retailers, both online and in-store, as well as providing details on rumoured releases, the latest PS5 games and accessories to snap up.

What PS5 stock drops could we see this week?

Monday 13 September 2021 08:30 , Eva Waite-Taylor

Good morning and welcome back to another week of PS5 stock tracking! Over the weekend ShopTo restocked bundles, proving once again that Sunday is one of the retailer’s favourite drop days.

But what about this week? Well, we’re predicting restocks at Game and BT this week. Stay tuned and we’ll take you through all the drops as and when they happen.

Will Game have a PS5 restock this week?

Monday 13 September 2021 08:52 , Alistair Charlton

Game is one of the retailers we expect to have a PS5 restock this week. In fact, the retailer has gone so far as to put a release date for both models of PS5 on its website. Yes, we know the consoles were first released back in the autumn of 2020, but securing PS5 stock is still a struggle due to the ongoing global chip shortage.

So that’s why Game is stating a release date, for both models of PS5, of 17 September. That’s this Friday, so you shouldn’t have long to wait to secure yourself a shiny new console.

Game has also updated its PS5 bundles page, with these also showing a release date of 17 September. With no fewer than 58 different bundles on offer, we’re hoping this restock will be a big one.

Argos is expected to get PS5 stock on 14 September

Monday 13 September 2021 09:09 , Alistair Charlton

 (The Independent)
(The Independent)

We’re hearing some very exciting news from Argos, which is expected to have a PS5 restock tomorrow, 14 September. Most stores across the UK are expected to have stock ready to sell this Tuesday, and this will include both the regular PS5 and the PS5 digital edition.

The restock is expected to go live in the morning, sometime between 8am and 10am, and consoles will be available to secure online.

How much does the PS5 cost?

Monday 13 September 2021 09:30 , Alistair Charlton

As we’re sure you are all aware by now, Sony makes two versions of the PlayStation 5. The PS5 digital edition is priced at £349.99, while the regular PS5, which includes a Blu-ray disc drive, costs £449.99. The latter is the same as the Xbox series X, while the less powerful Xbox series S (which also lacks a disc drive) undercuts the digital PS5, at £249.

But many retailers, including Game, Very, Argos, ShopTo, Ace Studio, like to sell their PS5 stock in bundles. This often means spending more but getting extras like a second controller, a selection of games and other accessories. Bundles tend to be easier to get hold of, but you’ll end up spending more money than when buying the console on its own.

PS5 stock is now available at BT

Monday 13 September 2021 09:48 , Alistair Charlton

PS5 stock has just landed at the BT online store. There’s a queuing system already in place and we’ve seen three purchase options available.

There’s the regular console for £449, as well as the console plus an extra controller for £508.99 and a console plus an extra controller and headset for £598.98.

As we have seen before with BT, you need to be a BT customer to access this restock. So before you head to the check-out make sure to have a valid code. If you don’t have a code, you can claim one from your BT account page. BT should be sending these codes out to broadband customers at 10am today, 13 September. Once you have the code you can head to the BT store and make your purchase.

When it’s your turn to enter the online store you’ll have 10 minutes to complete your PS5 order.

How to pre-order Fifa 22 for PS5

Monday 13 September 2021 10:03 , Alistair Charlton

Football fans, rejoice. The next installment of the Fifa video game, called Fifa 22, can be pre-ordered right now ahead of its 1 October release date. As well as both versions of PS5, Fifa 22 can be played on the PlayStation 4, plus the Xbox One, Xbox series S and X, and the Steam and Google Stadia streaming services.

There will be two versions of the game, called standard edition and ultimate edition. Pre-ordering the former means you can start playing on the global release date of 1 October, but if you pay out for the ultimate edition you can kick-off your first Fifa 22 match on 27 September.

You can pre-order both editions of Fifa 22 right now by visiting the EA website, and the editions are also available on Amazon (from £54.99, Amazon.co.uk), Game (from £64.99, Game.co.uk), Very (from £54.99, Very.co.uk) and GameByte (from £54.95, Gamebyte.com).

BT restock sells out in minutes

Monday 13 September 2021 10:18 , Alistair Charlton

Well, that was quick. It appears that BT jumped its own gun slightly by adding PS5 stock to the online store before sending codes out to broadband customers. A 10-minute queuing system formed instantly, and by about 10:05am the restock had dried up entirely.

Congratulations if you managed to grab one, but fear not if you missed out because we’re expecting fresh PS5 stock from Game and Argos this week.

How to check for walk-in PS5 stock at Smyths Toys

Monday 13 September 2021 11:03 , Alistair Charlton

Buying online isn’t the only way to bag yourself a PS5. Smyths Toys has a useful tool on its website for checking on stock in all of its UK stores. Just as with the Xbox series X, this tool is updated whenever a console arrives and is available to buy in person.

Predictably, there is currently no PS5 or PS5 digital edition stock available in any Smyths store in the UK. But try not to lose hope, because it’s worth giving the website a quick check several times a day, as you might well get lucky as new consoles become available.

The best accessories for your new PS5 console

(Amazon)

If you’ve managed to bag a PS5, or are still waiting patiently for the next restock, then how about some accessories to go with it? Some, like headsets and additional controllers, are included in console bundles from the likes of Game, while others are worth buying separately.

The Independent has rounded up a selection of the best PS5 accessories right here, including the PS5 dualsense controller (£56.99, Amazon.co.uk) and dualsense charging station (£24.99, Amazon.co.uk).

We also recommend the PS5 HD camera (£40.99, Amazon.co.uk), and if you need some extra storage there’s the massive Seagate 4TB HDD (£84.99, Amazon.co.uk) for storing loads of extra games. Lastly, if you’re an avid gamer and want to treat yourself to a great new third-party controller, we recommend the Nacon revolution unlimited pro controller (£119.99, Game.co.uk).

PlayStation Showcase recap: All the PS5 games to get excited about

Monday 13 September 2021 12:05 , Alistair Charlton

 (Sony)
(Sony)

In case you missed it, Sony held a PlayStation Showcase event last week, showing off a whole bunch of games coming to the PS4 and PS5 consoles over the coming months.

There was a lot to get excited about, including an announcement and gameplay trailer for God of War: Ragarok, and trailers for Marvel’s new Wolverine and Spider-Man 2 games.

The showcase also featured the announcement of an “enhanced version” of GTA V for the Playstation 5 (and Xbox Series X/S) due out in March 2022. There’s still no word on the next installment of Grand Theft Auto, or even confirmation that the game is in the works. In reality, it is likely still several years away.

There was better news for fans of more realistic driving games, as Gran Turismo 7 has a release date of 4 March 2022. But, as much as we hope this becomes a reality, GT’s developers are no strangers to a delay or two (or three, or four…) so we’ll resist holding our breath on this one for now. And if it is delayed, that just gives you more time to finally find a PS5!

Other games announced last week include Tchia, Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection, Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Extraction (coming January 2022), Forspoken (spring 2022), Bloodhunt and Ghostwire: Tokyo (2022).

Here you’ll find all of the latest news on when Xbox series X stock is likely to drop – but we’re warning you now, series X restocks are few and far between at the moment, so securing a console can be tricky. The best way to grab one is, of course, by keeping an eye on our updates.

PS5 vs PS5 digital edition: What’s the difference?

Monday 13 September 2021 14:02 , Alistair Charlton

As you probably know by now, there are two versions of the PlayStation 5. The performance of these two consoles is identical and the only difference is how the cheaper PS5 digital edition does not have a disc drive.

This means it cannot play Blu-ray movies, and games must be downloaded to its 825 GB hard drive. Games can also be downloaded to the regular PS5, but they can also be played from a disc.

The lack of a disc drive means the digital edition is slightly smaller, at 390mm x 92mm x 260mm, compared to 390mm x 104mm x 260mm for the regular console. The digital edition is also slightly lighter, at 3.9kg compared to 4.5kg.

Games are often cheaper when bought on disc, especially on launch day and once they arrive on the second-hand market. So, while the £349 digital edition will save you £100 on day one, you could end up paying more over time.

How to pre-order a Nintendo Switch OLED

As we all wait to finally grab a PS5, it’s worth looking ahead to what games will be launching towards the end of 2021. A highlight is undoubtedly the next installment of gaming’s biggest military franchise, Call of Duty: Vanguard.

The game is coming to both PS4 and PS5, with a release date on both consoles of 5 November, and the good news is that you can pre-order Call of Duty: Vanguard from retailers like Amazon, Argos, ShopTo and others right now.

Goodbye for today from the PS5 live blog

(The Independent)

And so that concludes another day of PS5 restock news! How did it pan out for you? We hope some of you got lucky with the short BT restock earlier, but realistically we feel all eyes will be on Game tomorrow morning. The retailer has stated that PS5 stock, mostly in the form of bundles, will land on 14 September, so keep your eyes peeled that first thing on Tuesday morning!

Argos PS5 stock is live now

Tuesday 14 September 2021 08:13 , Alex Lee

Gooooood morning PS5 hunters and what a glorious morning it is. Argos has just dropped the PS5 onto its website.

The drop is happening region by region, and is available for both collection and home delivery. Immediate collection is definitely happening though. Keep refreshing if your location hasn’t appeared yet. There are a reported 8,000 to 10,000 consoles available at this drop.

Very PS5 waiting room opens

Tuesday 14 September 2021 08:36 , Alex Lee

Everyone’s coming out to play this morning! If you’re struggling to check out at Argos, try your hand at Very. That’s right, the PS5 waiting room has just opened up at the retailer. It’s expected to have both the disc and digital edition consoles available, as well as bundles.

For now, people are being funnelled into a waiting room, but the doors should open in the next half an hour. Keep persisting with Argos until they do.

One option at Very is a PS5 disc edition console with a dualsense controller and a pulse 3D wireless headset for £599.97 (Very.co.uk).

Game PS5 consoles set to drop in the next hour

Tuesday 14 September 2021 08:52 , Alex Lee

Struggling to buy a console from Argos and can’t be bothered to wait for Very’s PS5 gates to open? They’re not the only retailers with restocks taking place this morning. Game is about to go live with a massive haul of PS5 bundles sometime between 9am and 10am today.

The retailer usually has 27 bundles available for you to choose from – already a considerable amount – but it now has a whopping 62! Most are a bit naff, but more bundles equals more chances to nab yourself a PS5. We’d recommend scrolling over to page two and selecting one from there – most people will click on the first one they see.

Stuck in the Very PS5 waiting room?

Tuesday 14 September 2021 09:11 , Alex Lee

If you’re still in the Very PS5 waiting room, keep waiting, and don’t refresh the page. Very takes into account your waiting room position when the doors open, so if you refresh the page, you’ll be pushed right back to the end of the line.

The retailer typically opens the waiting room doors within an hour of the queue going live, so we shouldn’t have long left to wait now.

We’ll let you know as soon as the queue opens up – it might happen at the exact same time as the Game drop.

Best PS5 accessories

Tuesday 14 September 2021 09:43 , Alex Lee

The PS5 consoles on Game’s PS5 bundles page come with a fair few different accessories, like the dualsense controller and the pulse 3D wireless headset. If you’re looking at them, thinking to yourself, are these bits and bobs worth the extra money? Well, they both appear in our round-up of the best PS5 accessories, so we’d say: yep!

The PlayStation 5 dualsense controller (£56.99, Amazon.co.uk) is an essential addition for two-player play. Our reviewer said: “Besides looking and feeling good, it also has some useful features such as haptic feedback, which is a form of far superior vibration, and a set of trigger buttons that are much more responsive and tactile than previous PlayStation controllers.”

People are being let out of the Very PS5 waiting room

Tuesday 14 September 2021 09:53 , Alex Lee

Finally! It’s open! People are slowly being let out of Very’s PS5 waiting room. There are a few different bundle options to choose from, including one with a copy of the Ghost of Tsushima: Director’s Cut edition game. We’ll update you with prices as and when we have them. We’re still in the waiting room ourselves, but some people have begun checking out.

A staple at Very is the PS5 disc edition console with a dualsense controller and a pulse 3D wireless headset for £599.97 (Very.co.uk).

In true Very fashion, the retailer has now restocked the Xbox series X as well! If you’re on the hunt for one of those, check out our Xbox series X restock liveblog for all the latest news and updates as they happen. We’ll let you know when both the PS5 and Xbox consoles at Very sell out.

When was the last John Lewis PS5 restock?

Tuesday 14 September 2021 10:40 , Alex Lee

The PS5 disc edition console has now sold out at Very, but the digital edition console is still in stock.

Buy the digital edition PS5 from Very

While we wait for Game to drop its consoles, let’s have a look at John Lewis & Partners. The retailer last had a PS5 drop at 7am on 3 August. As usual with the retailer, it didn’t last very long, but it did drop at 7am as it always does.

The retailer only appears to get a couple of thousand consoles or less each time new stock comes in, so we’re not expecting anything big the next time there’s a drop. John Lewis & Partners was rumoured to drop earlier this month, but it has reportedly been pushed back to the end of September or the start of October.

Need a Very promo code?

Tuesday 14 September 2021 11:04 , Alex Lee

If you’re looking for a Very PS5 promo code, well, you’re going to be looking for a really long time. PS5 promo codes simply don’t exist. The PS5 sells out quick enough without the retailer adding a discount on top of it. That said, if you’re looking for general Very voucher codes, we’ve got some where you can save up to 30 per cent off on electricals (not the PS5!)

Tuesday 14 September 2021 11:44 , Alex Lee

SOUND THE ALARM! The PS5 is finally in stock at Game.

There are a massive 43 bundles to choose from this time round, so we expect stock to last for a very, very long time.

The cheapest disc edition bundle comes with a “Player1” T-shirt (£464.98, Game.co.uk). The most expensive disc bundle comes with a dual sense controller and a pulse 3D gaming headset (£599.97, Game.co.uk).

Other highlights include a PS5 disc edition bundle, which includes a copy of Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales and an additional dual sense controller (£594.96, Game.co.uk) and the same PS5 bundle, except with Demon’s Souls (£594.96, Game.co.uk).

In the bestselling Spider-Man: Miles Morales (£44.99, Currys.co.uk), Peter Parker is replaced with his awkward teenage protégé, Miles Morales. A next-generation spin-off, Spider-Man: Miles Morales refines the original’s formula,” our reviewer said. “This is a streamlined adventure with a more focused story, far less busy work and an endearingly clumsy protagonist still getting to grips with his powers.”

Meanwhile, Demon’s Souls (£57.99, Currys.co.uk) on PS5 is a showcase of what the new console is capable of. “The oppressive gothic architecture, yawning arches and festering dungeons of this cult classic look spectacular on the new hardware, while remaining faultlessly faithful to the aesthetic and vibe of the original game,” our tester said.

Why is there a PS5 shortage?

Tuesday 14 September 2021 13:50 , Alex Lee

PS5 consoles are notoriously difficult to secure – gold dust for gamers, some would say. And while the stock situation has definitely improved today and last month especially, There are a number of reasons why it’s always out of stock. For one, it was released in the middle of a global pandemic, and the Covid-19 crisis caused much of the manufacturing industry to shut down.

If you want to read more about the pandemic’s effect on supply and distribution, check out our explainer below:

Which games console is best?

Tuesday 14 September 2021 15:30 , Alex Lee

With so many competitors on the market, from Xbox to Nintendo, it’s hard to know which console to invest in.

Sony’s cutting edge console is certainly a standout that has several advantages over its direct rival, the Xbox Series X – including its DualSense controller with its haptic feedback and adaptive triggers.

Sony’s PS5 exclusives are also impressive with Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales and the kid-focused Bugsnax both instant hits upon release and upcoming games such as Horizon Forbidden West and the forthcoming God of War Ragnarok sequel eagerly anticipated.

PS5 disc edition vs PS5 digital edition console

Tuesday 14 September 2021 16:20 , Alex Lee

The major difference between the PS5 disc edition and the PS5 digital edition console is that the former has a disc drive and the latter does not. If you’ve got the disc edition console, you’ll be able to insert your PS4 discs into the PS5 and play them. Obviously, because there’s no physical disc slot on the digital edition of the PS5, you’ll only be able to play games you’ve downloaded from the PlayStation Store.

The PS5 disc edition costs £449.99, while the PS5 digital edition is cheaper at £349.99. The digital edition console seems to have less stock availability than the disc edition console, with it getting frequently snapped up at a moment’s notice.

Goodbye from your PS5 stock trackers

Tuesday 14 September 2021 17:00 , Alex Lee

Whew, what a day! The big hitters have finally come to town. We had three massive drops today from Game, Very and Argos, meaning PS5 stock was available from pretty much 8am until 2pm, giving us six hours of consoles.

We say this a lot – but Very and Game both continue to deliver the goods in a massive way, providing drops that consistently last hours on end. We’ll be back tomorrow for some more PS5 stock tracking action, and we’re hoping to see a restock at Amazon.

Where could the PS5 restock today?

Wednesday 15 September 2021 08:19 , Alex Lee

Good morning PS5 seekers and welcome to another day of stock tracking action. Yesterday was an absolutely incredible day for restocks, we saw three massive retailers drop hefty bags of consoles, including Game, Very and Argos. Can hump day live up to terrific Tuesday? We’ll have to wait and see...

This morning, we’ve got our eyes trained firmly on Amazon, who hasn’t had a drop in over a month. Fingers crossed we’ll finally get one today. Stick around and we’ll deliver all the stock updates as and when they happen.

What time could Amazon PS5 consoles drop?

Wednesday 15 September 2021 08:39 , Alex Lee

 (The Independent)
(The Independent)

Amazon is one of the retailers rumoured to drop stock this morning and its avalanche of consoles could arrive anytime now. It’s been absolutely ages since Amazon last had a drop on 11 August, which is pretty unusual for the online retail juggernaut.

Since July, you’ve had to be a Prime subscriber to buy a PS5 from the online retailer. If you aren’t one, we’d suggest signing up for a 30-day free trial. Amazon usually updates its product description page with a note about Prime exclusivity prior to a drop, so watch out for that. If it does drop today, expect it sometime between 8:30am and 10am.

When was the last Currys PC World PS5 drop?

Wednesday 15 September 2021 08:54 , Alex Lee

Currys PC World hasn’t had a general sale drop since March, when it first started the PS5 VIP pass draw. If you’re unfamiliar, it’s essentially a raffle system in which Currys would dish out codes that people could redeem in their local store to buy a console,

Currys had a surprise in-store restock at the end of August, with people managing to buy a bundle from roughly 80 different stores. It last sent out new VIP codes at the start of September. Sadly, the pass draw has been closed to new entrants since June, so you’ll have to look elsewhere if you didn’t sign up in time.

Game PS5 stock is live (again)

Wednesday 15 September 2021 09:04 , Alex Lee

The PS5 is back in stock at Game! The bundles available are most likely cancelled orders from the drop yesterday, so we expect them to go fast.

Why is the PS5 digital edition console harder to find than the disc edition?

Wednesday 15 September 2021 09:43 , Alex Lee

 (iStock/The Independent)
(iStock/The Independent)

As with yesterday’s Game drop, there aren’t any digital edition consoles available this time round, continuing the status quo of the digital edition being harder to buy than the disc edition console.

It’s pretty much been this way ever since the console was first released back in November. When the console first came out, retailers were allocated around 25 per cent digital edition consoles and 75 per cent disc edition console. We don’t know if the situation has changed since then, but we still see fewer digital edition consoles dropping than disc edition consoles.

Retailers themselves might also prefer to order in the disc edition console over digital – they cost more (£449.99) for one, and they can bundle it with physical games to charge a premium.

There are still some bundles left at Game.

Cyberpunk 2077 was supposed to be one of the best games of 2020. But when it came out, it was just a hot mess. Technical issues plagued the game, and it didn’t play well on the PS4, leading to it being taken off Sony’s PlayStation Store altogether. The game returned to the store in June and in early July Adam Kiciński, the CD Projekt Red CEO, said that the game had reached a satisfactory level in terms of stability.

In a June earnings call, Kiciński said that a PS5 version of the game was still going to be reissued this year, but in early September, this was thrown into doubt when VP of business development Michał Nowakowski said that this could be pushed back further.

“The target is to release the next gen version of Cyberpunk 2077 late this year,” he said. “At the same time, keeping in mind the lessons we have learned during the past year and taking into account that this project still remains in development, we can’t say with full certainty that the production schedule will not change.”

What’s in the new PS5 software update?

Wednesday 15 September 2021 11:05 , Alex Lee

It’s a great time to have just bagged a PS5 from Game (if you did just manage to get one, that is). The new PS5 software update is released today and oh boy, is it a big one.

There are UX improvements, social experience improvements, 3D audio support for built-in speakers and, finally, SSD expansion. You can read about the new update in Sony’s PS5 blog post.

Where the heck is the Amazon PS5 drop?

Wednesday 15 September 2021 11:50 , Alex Lee

It’s been over a month since Amazon last had a restock and, looking at the time, it’s unlikely that the retailer is going to restock again today. The latest we’ve ever seen new PS5 consoles drop on the company’s website is 10:45am, so we’ve scratched it off our list for now.

We’re not sure what’s up with Amazon, but it’s very peculiar for it to go this long without restocking the PS5 console. We don’t expect it to drop on Thursday or Friday, so next week becomes the new likely restock period. Don’t let us down, Amazon.

Can you play PS4 games on PS5?

Wednesday 15 September 2021 12:40 , Alex Lee

You sure can! The overwhelming majority of the PS4 games you own are playable on the PS5. You’ll be able to download any games you bought through the PlayStation store on your PS4 and play them on the next-gen console.

If you’ve got the disc edition of the PS5, you’ll also be able to insert your PS4 discs into it and play them that way, too. Obviously, because there’s no physical disc slot on the digital edition of the console, you won’t be able to play any PS4 discs you own. We’ve compiled a list of our favourite PS4 games, and most of them have dropped in price since the PS5 came out.

Upcoming PS5 games: ‘Far Cry 6’ PS5

Wednesday 15 September 2021 13:30 , Alex Lee

‘Far Cry 6’: £54.99, Amazon.co.uk

 (Ubisoft)
(Ubisoft)

Set in a tropical paradise, you’ll play as Dani Rojas, who is on a mission to take down the ruthless dictator in a bid to save his son. It’s likely to be as politically dicey as the previous Far Cry games made by Ubisoft. With such high-end production values, we’re expecting that this will be a huge hit.

The game was initially slated for a February release, but thanks to those pesky delays, it’s been pushed back and confirmed for 7 October, which is bang in the middle of the big gaming season. Make sure you beat the crowds by pre-ordering it now.

Best PS5 SSD

Wednesday 15 September 2021 14:20 , Alex Lee

 (Amazon)
(Amazon)

As of today’s update, gamers with oodles of PS5 games can finally install their own SSD onto their PS5 and expand the storage of the console. Before this, only external hard drives could be used, and only PS4 games could be stored on them. It’s a little bit confusing to install, requiring removal of the thumbscrew, a heatsink and more, but it’s the price Sony makes you pay for expanding your internal storage.

Want an external SSD instead? We’d recommend the Seagate 4TB HDD (£88.99, Amazon.co.uk). Only PS4 games can be stored on it however. You can read our review of the SSD and our other favourite PS5 accessories below.

Want an Xbox series X?

Wednesday 15 September 2021 16:00 , Alex Lee

We’ve been following the scent of PS5s for months and months now, but it’s not the only next-gen console we’re getting a whiff of. We’re also tracking stock of the Xbox series X, which is just as elusive as the PS5.

Game has just had an All Access Xbox series X restock, which lasted (literally) days. If you want Microsoft’s next-gen console, head over to our Xbox stock tracking liveblog for all the latest updates. You’ll be the first to know when the console next drops.

Can you get a VPN on the PS5?

Wednesday 15 September 2021 16:40 , Alex Lee

While Sony doesn’t allow any VPN apps like NordVPN or ExpressVPN to be downloaded from the PlayStation Store (VPNs aren’t supported on the platform at all), there’s still a way to use a VPN on the PS5 if you want to stream geo-restricted content.

We’d recommend getting a VPN which has the Smart DNS feature. It’s a service provided by a number of VPN firms, including NordVPN, allowing you to spoof your location on devices that don’t have VPN support. You can read our round-up of the best VPNs for more information.

Laterz from your resident PS5 stock trackers

Wednesday 15 September 2021 17:00 , Alex Lee

Aaaand that’s a wrap for another day of PS5 stock tracking. While we didn’t get that Amazon drop we were so desperately hoping to see, we did get an unexpected second dose of consoles from Game.

Join us back here again tomorrow for some more PS5 stock sniffing. We could see another drop at Scan, Ace Studio and Box.co.uk Catch you all then!.

Good morning and welcome to the PS5 live blog

Thursday 16 September 2021 08:15 , Alistair Charlton

Good morning, PS5 hunters! Welcome back to The Independent’s PS5 live blog, where we’ll bring you all of the latest restocking news from across the UK. A drop hoping to hit Amazon on Wednesday didn’t materialise, but we remain hopeful that more stock will land at other retailers before the end of the week.

Stay tuned to this live blog for the very latest PS5 restocking news throughout the day.

Could an Amazon restock still arrive this week?

Thursday 16 September 2021 08:30 , Alistair Charlton

All eyes were on Amazon on Wednesday as it was hoped the retail giant would have some shiny new PS5 consoles to share with us all. But sadly it wasn’t to be, and we’re left with the all-too-familiar “currently unavailable” message.

The question now is, might Amazon have a PS5 restock later in the week? We can’t say for sure, but Amazon usually restocks its PlayStation 5 supplies on Tuesday or Wednesday, so it would be unusual for a restock to land on Thursday or Friday. But don’t lose hope, as restocking isn’t an exact science and Amazon might well surprise us yet.

Which retailers could still have a PS5 restock this week?

Thursday 16 September 2021 08:39 , Alistair Charlton

It’s been a busy week for PS5 restocks, with BT dropping consoles on Monday, followed by restocks from Game, Argos and Very on Tuesday. We then also saw a small restock from Game on Wednesday, which was likely cancelled orders from the previous day. Amazon’s rumoured Wednesday drop failed to materialise.

Meanwhile, AO has had two PS5 restocks this month, on the 2nd and 9th, so is unlikely to have more stock until October if it continues to follow its two-drops-per-month routine. Smyths has dropped PS5 stock just once this month, so we could see more from the toy store in September, while Asda and John Lewis are yet to make any stock available in September so far.

What’s the difference between the PS5 and PS5 digital edition?

Thursday 16 September 2021 08:58 , Alistair Charlton

 (Sony)
(Sony)

Sony sells two versions of the PlayStation 5. Unlike the Xbox series S and series X, the two PS5 consoles have identical performance and play games equally well. They also have the same 825 GB of solid-state internal storage.

The only difference is how the digital edition does not have a disc drive. This means its games have to be downloaded from the PlayStation store, and it cannot play Blu-ray movies either.

The lack of a disc drive means the digital edition is cheaper, priced at £359.99 compared to £449.99 for the regular console with a disc drive. Currently, the PS5 digital edition is harder to get hold of and appears far less frequently in restocks than the disc edition.

(Amazon)

If you managed to bag a PS5 this week through the drops at Game, Very and Argos – or even if you’re still waiting in hope – you’ll probably want to buy some accessories too.

From controllers and cameras, to charging docks, hard drives and headphones, there are plenty of accessories to improve your PS5. You can read all about them on The Independent’s guide to the best PS5 accessories for 2021.

These include Sony’s own PS5 dualsense controller (£56.99, Amazon.co.uk), the PS5 dualsense charging station (£24.99, Amazon.co.uk) and PS5 HD camera (£40.99, Amazon.co.uk).

When did PS5 stock last arrive at AO?

Thursday 16 September 2021 09:57 , Alistair Charlton

Electronics retailer AO has had two PS5 restocks per month since June and has already completed two drops in September, on the 2nd and 9th. The site currently lists both versions of the PS5 as unavailable and doesn’t give any indication as to when more stock will arrive. We’ve a feeling gamers will have to wait until October to get their hands on a PS5 from AO.

In better news AO is more consistent with its restocking than some other retailers. John Lewis hasn’t had PS5 stock since 3 August and Asda is also yet to drop stock in September, having last restocked on 25 August.

Currys PC World sends out new VIP codes

Thursday 16 September 2021 10:11 , Alistair Charlton

Currys PC World has just sent out a fresh batch of VIP codes to those already registered via email. Codes have to be redeemed in-store and by no later than 21st September.

If you aren’t aware, Currys used to run a VIP pass draw, allowing people to register to be in with the chance of buying a PlayStation 5, but it closed in early June to new entrants. The retailer is still getting through those who registered. So check your inbox and junk folder, you may be one of the chosen ones!

These codes are for the PS5 disc edition, not the digital edition.

When did Smyths Toys last have a PS5 restock?

Thursday 16 September 2021 10:32 , Alistair Charlton

Smyths Toys might be one of the smaller retailers selling PS5 stock, but it has also been among the most reliable. The store had two PS5 restocks in June, followed by three in August. So far we have seen one restock from Smyths this month, on 8 September.

This leaves plenty of time for another drop to land before the month ends, but Smyths is urging caution and currently states that fresh stock is expected in October. Smyths also says how pre-orders placed during the last drop will be fulfilled by 24 September, so those lucky enough to grab a PS5 then shouldn’t have too much longer to wait.

The best games for your PS5

 (Amazon)
(Amazon)

Congratulations to anyone who managed to buy a PS5 at Game, Very and Argos this week. With the console now winging its way to your door, you’ll want some games to go with it. Thanfully, we’ve got a round-up of the best PS5 games, just for you.

In the bestselling Spider-Man: Miles Morales game (£44.99, Currys.co.uk), Peter Parker is replaced with his awkward teenage protégé, Miles Morales. A next-generation spin-off, Spider-Man: Miles Morales “refines the original’s formula,” our reviewer said, adding: “This is a streamlined adventure with a more focused story, far less busy work and an endearingly clumsy protagonist still getting to grips with his powers.”

Meanwhile, Demon’s Souls (£57.99, Currys.co.uk) on PS5 is a showcase of what the powerful new console is capable of. “The oppressive gothic architecture, yawning arches and festering dungeons of this cult classic look spectacular on the new hardware, while remaining faultlessly faithful to the aesthetic and vibe of the original game,” our tester said.

Pre-ordered consoles arrive at Smyths Toys

Thursday 16 September 2021 12:03 , Alistair Charlton

Good news for anyone who successfully ordered a PlayStation 5 during the most recent restock on 8 September – your console is ready for collection.

We’re hearing that buyers will be contacted by Smyths about collecting their consoles from a local store, starting today.

The 8th was the last PS5 restock seen by Smyths, and came after drops on the 3, 4 and 17 August. We were initially hopeful of a second or even third PS5 restock for Smyths this month, but the website currently says shoppers will have to wait until October.

How to find local PS5 stock at Smyths

Thursday 16 September 2021 12:26 , Alistair Charlton

 (The Independent)
(The Independent)

PS5 restocks aren’t just limited to online retailers, and we recommend shoppers regularly check on their local stores for fresh stock. Smyths Toys has a useful online tool for this, where you can search for PS5 stock at every one of the retailer’s UK stores.

Sure, you might not want to drive the length of the country to bag yourself a PS5, but if a pre-ordered console goes unsold at a local store, the Smyths website will tell you.

We’ve just checked and the website shows no PS5 stock at any Smyths shop, but don’t lose hope because consoles do get added sporadically throughout the day.

The biggest PS5 games still to come in 2021

 (Activision Blizzard)
(Activision Blizzard)

If you’ve just secured yourself a PS5 – or are still patiently waiting for a restock to land – you’ll want to know what games are coming to the console later in 2021. And the good news is, there’s a lot to get excited about.

This will see the release of Kena: Bridge of Spirits by Ember Lab on 23 September, followed by Kojima Productions’ Death’s Stranding Director’s Cut on 24 September. After that there is Ubisoft’s Far Cry 6 arriving on 7 October, followed by Back 4 Blood on 12 October and EA’s Battlefield 2042 on 22 October.

October is a busy month for OS5 games, and the final days of the month will see Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy and Solar Ash both land on 26 October, followed by Riders Republic on 28 October.

After that, one of the biggest PS5 games of the year, Call of Duty: Vanguard will arrive on 5 November, just before Skyrim: Anniversary Edition on 11 November.

PS5 live blog signing off

Thursday 16 September 2021 17:00 , Alistair Charlton

And with that, we’re signing off for the evening. Did you managed to bag a PS5 through the Currys PC World VIP code system? Perhaps a PS5 found its way into your local branch of Smyths? If not, then don’t panic. We’ll be back again tomorrow to share everything we can on how to land yourself a PlayStation 5.

What PS5 stock drops could we see today?

08:18 , Alex Lee

G’morning PS5 hunters. Happy Friday! The week started out so good for PS5 restocks, but it’s slowly whimpering out. We had drops at BT, Smyths Toys, Game, Very and Argos. To be fair, that’s a mega list of retailers, who probably used up their PS5 magic early. But we’re still hopeful that we’ll end the week on a bang.

What stock drops could we see today? We’ve currently got our eyes on Box.co.uk’s expensive PS5 bundle, as well as ShopTo, who has had several drops so far this month.

When was the last ShopTo PS5drop?

08:42 , Alex Lee

ShopTo last dropped the PS5 on Thursday 9 September, but it’s been having so many restocks this month that we’d be silly not to consider the possibility of another drop. The retailer usually drops stock on Sunday afternoon, around 1pm, so there’s a good chance that could happen again this week.

But it’s also dropped stock at random evenings during the week, so it’s kind of, well, all over the place. It’s one we’re going to be keeping an eye on today.

The retailer removes the consoles from its website whenever there’s no stock availability, so the links won’t work until the console is live. It sells a PS5 disc edition console bundle with a dualsense controller, a copy of Resident Evil Village and a copy of Overcooked All You Can Eat for £609.85 (Shopto.net). Another bundle includes Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales instead of Overcooked for £621.85 (Shopto.net) or the same bundle with just Resident Evil Village for £569.85 (Shopto.net).

PS5 storage expansion

09:03 , Alex Lee

Did you hear the news? You can finally expand the internal storage of your PS5, allowing you to store PS5 games, PS4 games and other media on it. But as Sony admits itself (in the video above the blog), the hard drive must meet certain performance criteria, and has to be paired with a cooling structure, like a heatsink. It’s all a bit of a faff, if we’re honest.

If you’re not up for messing around with your PS5 internals too much, we’d recommend getting an external hard drive instead. The only downside is that you can’t add any PS5 games onto it. We like the Seagate 4TB SSD, found in our round-up of the best PS5 accessories below.

The PS5 headset is getting a new colourway

09:41 , Alex Lee

 (Sony)
(Sony)

You know it’s a slow restock day when we start talking about new product colourways, but we’re actually pretty big fans of the new midnight black version of the PS5 pulse 3D wireless headset. Just like the dualsense controller did a couple of months ago, Sony is also giving the headset a facelift, and it launches on 29 October.

You can already pre-order it at Amazon for £89.99 (Amazon.co.uk). If only the retailer would drop the console as well.

“There’s no shortage of gaming headset options out there but the PlayStation 5 pulse 3D wireless headset is a little bit special,” our tester said in our review of the best PS5 accessories. “Made with certain PlayStation 5 games in mind, its 3D audio means you can feel fully immersed in the experience, feeling like things are truly happening all around you.”

Want a Nintendo Switch instead?

10:00 , Alex Lee

If all the stock issues associated with Sony’s latest console has got you feeling a little, well, over it, perhaps consider a Nintendo Switch (£279.99, Argos.co.uk) as a viable alternative.

With fierce competition between the best gaming console, in our review, our writer noted that “Nintendo has never been afraid of taking risks with its console designs, and the Switch console, first released in 2017, is a perfect example of them getting it just right.”

As “a home console that can be detached from a TV dock and used as a portable device,” it’s “well-suited to couch multiplayer, a mode that is facilitated by the novel controller design, which allows each controller to separate into two parts, each functioning independently.”

Nintendo has recently announced a new version of the console, called the Nintendo Switch OLED. It’s currently in stock at the Nintendo Store, head on over to our restock guide to find out how to pre-order it.

When will John Lewis PS5 stock drop?

10:25 , Alex Lee

John Lewis & Partners hasn’t had a restock since 11 August and according to one PS5 stock tracker, it’s not expected to have another one until the end of the month or maybe even THE START OF OCTOBER! It’s not a retailer we’d count on either way. Drops are usually pretty short, lasting a few minutes, if that, and they also drop pretty early on in the morning.

We’re intrigued to find out if Asda and Amazon drop next week, however – it’s been just as long since those retailers restocked as well.

Game PS5 consoles could drop next week

11:05 , Alex Lee

Alert, alert! Here’s some breaking news from your resident PS5 stock trackers. Game has just updated its PS5 bundles page with new release dates of 30 September. That means the retailer could drop another batch of consoles as early as next week, going by previous restock patterns.

We are predicting a restock sometime between 21 September and 23 September. The retailer did just drop stock on Tuesday, but it missed out the digital edition consoles, so we’re hoping those will drop next week. The digital editions haven’t been listed on the site just yet.

Check out the PS5 bundles page

When was the last EE PS5 restock?

11:30 , Alex Lee

 (The Independent)
(The Independent)

EE last had a restock on 3 September. The drops at the retailer haven’t been as fruitful as the ones it had in August. If you weren’t with us then, it restocked the PS5 every single day of the week in the first week of August, with the last August drop happening on the 9th.

Annoyingly, only EE customers are able to buy a PS5 from the retailer, with eligible customers needing to be on a 12-month or longer contract. The network provider doesn’t sell the digital edition console, only the PS5 disc edition (£40 a month for 11 months), but you can also get a PS5 disc edition bundle with an additional dualsense controller (£45 a month for 11 months).

We’re hopeful for one more EE drop in September.

PS5 release date UK

12:05 , Alex Lee

Can you believe that it’s almost been a year since the PS5 was first released in the UK? Yeah, neither can we. We’re all still here on the struggle bus, trying to get a console that should have been in your hands months ago.

In the UK, the PS5 was released on 19 November. Analysts are predicting that stock won’t be readily available until potentially 2023 (!!). Let’s just hope they’re very, very wrong.

Currys PC World PS5 VIP codes were sent out yesterday

12:55 , Alex Lee

Just a little reminder to check your inbox and junk folder for an email from Currys PC World if you managed to sign up for its VIP pass draw before it closed to new entrants in early June. The retailer sent out new PS5 VIP codes yesterday morning, and they have to be redeemed by 21 September, so you’ve still got four days to head in-store and claim the console.

This is probably it for Currys codes this month, with the next batch most likely being sent out in early October. We have got in touch with Currys PC World out to ask when the pass draw will reopen and will let you know when we get a response.

We’re taking a quick break from tracking PS5 stock to mention that, while it’s still months away, retailers are already preparing for the biggest sales event of the commercial calendar – Black Friday!

‘Fifa 22’ PS5 release date

14:35 , Alex Lee

For the first time since the launch of Fifa 15, there are only two editions of Fifa available – the standard edition and the ultimate edition. If you pre-order the latter, you can start playing the game from Monday 27 September. Pre-ordering the standard edition of Fifa 22 means you’ll be able to play from its worldwide release date on 1 October.

You can pre-order both the standard and ultimate editions of Fifa 22 right now by visiting the EA website, and the editions are also available on Amazon (from £54.99, Amazon.co.uk).

PS5 vs Xbox series X

15:25 , Alex Lee

Stuck on which console to choose? Well, you’ve got plenty of time to decide between them, seeing as neither the PS5 or the Xbox series X are in stock right now.

The Independent’s technology editor, Andrew Griffin, weighed in with his comparative review of both consoles. He said: “The differences between the Xbox Series X and Series S are significant: the S is a little smaller, but with less power, so that some games will run with slightly less performance.“

“ Both consoles offer a host of improvements on their predecessors: new designs, vastly improved performance, and some though not many new games.” To find out his verdict, read his review of the PS5 and Xbox Series X.

Box PS5 stock goes live and sells out within minutes

15:30 , Alex Lee

As we predicted this morning, Box.co.uk just went live with PS5 consoles, but in classic PS5 restock fashion, all of them sold out within literal minutes.

The retailer had the expensive PS5 disc edition bundle with the HD camera and Logitech G29 racing wheel available for £699.99 (Box.co.uk). There was also a standalone digital edition console available for £359.99 (Box.co.uk).

We’ll let you know if any more retailers drop today.

Why is the PS5 digital edition so hard to find?

16:15 , Alex Lee

If you’ve been following our stock updates for a while, you’ve probably noticed that the PS5 disc edition console is far easier to buy than the digital edition. Game didn’t even restock the digital one on Tuesday, and EE doesn’t even sell the digital edition at all.

When Eurogamer spoke to sources at various retailers before the console launched, it was told that retailers had been allocated around 25 per cent digital edition consoles and 75 per cent disc edition consoles.

We don’t know if the situation has changed since then, but we still see fewer digital edition consoles dropping than disc edition consoles. Retailers themselves might also prefer to order in the disc edition console over digital – they cost more (£449.99) for one, and they can bundle it with physical games to charge a premium.

That’s all folks!

16:45 , Alex Lee

Aaaaaand that’s it for another week of PS5 stock tracking action. The week started out so well, but in the end, we were left with melted scraps of PS5 from the likes of Box and Currys PC World.

ShopTo could drop stock this Sunday, so we’d recommend keeping an eye on the retailer at around 1pm. As for next week, well, we’re hoping to see drops at Amazon, Game and Asda. Have an excellent weekend, and well done to anyone who managed to bag a console this week.
