Update: PS5 Stock is still available for BT customers with a unique voucher code.

2022 looks to be one of the most promising years for PS5 gamers, with upcoming titles such as Elden Ring, Sifu, Horizon: Forbidden West and Gran Turismo 7 coming in the next few months. But customers are still struggling to get their hands on the console itself due to an ongoing shortage.

Sony’s Playstation 5 was released in November 2020 and even over a year after its release, demand is still high. While January has been much slower in restocks, we saw plenty of drops take place in December during the lead-up to Christmas from retailers including Currys, PlayStation Direct, Game, BT and AO.

Our liveblog is here to get you one of Sony’s elusive Playstations, as well as providing details on the best games and accessories to grab alongside your new console. If you want to find out which online retailers will be the first to restock, then keep scrolling to receive updates as they happen.

That’s all from us today. If you managed to miss it, there’s still plenty of bundles available through the BT store which has been around for most of the week. The cheaper ones have unsurprisingly sold out but at least you can still get a second controller out of the ones that remain.

As always, the BT stock is still limited to one per customer and you still need a unique voucher code in order to claim it.

We’re back at it again on Monday so if you didn’t have much luck this week, we’re likely to see stock drops pick up again as we come out of the January slump. See you then.

PS5 vs Xbox series X

15:14 , Jasper Pickering

Stuck on which console to choose? The Independent’s technology editor, Andrew Griffin, weighed in with his comparative review of both consoles when they were first released, and it’s well worth a read if you’re struggling to decide.

“Both consoles offer a host of improvements on their predecessors: new designs, vastly improved performance, and new games”, he said. To find out his verdict, read his review of the PS5 and Xbox series X.

Best PS5 games: ‘Demon Souls’ PS5

14:25 , Jasper Pickering

One of our top picks of PS5 games is Demon’s Souls, which is currently on sale at Amazon right now.

‘Demon’s Souls’, PS5: Was £69.99, now £54.79, Amazon.co.uk.

A complete remake of From Software’s infamously punishing action RPG, “Demon’s Souls on PS5 is a showcase of what the new console is capable of,” our writer said in their review. “The oppressive gothic architecture, yawning arches and festering dungeons of this cult classic look spectacular on the new hardware, while remaining faultlessly faithful to the aesthetic and vibe of the original game.”

If handheld gaming is more your thing then check out our review of the new Nintendo Switch OLED. The console features an OLED display for the first time, which is larger than before and produces punchier colours and deeper blacks. There’s also a redesigned kickstand and double the internal storage of its predecessor.

Our reviewer said of the £309.99 console: “The larger display is fantastic and playing games in handheld mode is an absolute joy. The kickstand feels so solid and makes us never want to look at that little toggle on the back of the original Switch ever again...this is absolutely the best version of the console yet.”

Can you play PS4 games on PS5?

12:00 , Jasper Pickering

You sure can! The overwhelming majority of the PS4 games you own are playable on the PS5. You’ll be able to download any games you bought through the PlayStation store on your PS4 and play them on the next-gen console.

If you’ve got the disc edition of the PS5, you’ll also be able to insert your PS4 discs into it and play them that way, too. Obviously, because there’s no physical disc slot on the digital edition of the console, you won’t be able to play any PS4 discs you own. We’ve compiled together a list of our favourite PS4 games, and most of them have dropped in price since the PS5 came out.

How to buy an Xbox series X

11:17 , Jasper Pickering

The Xbox series X is just as hard to buy as the PS5. In fact, in recent weeks restocks of the Microsoft console have been even rarer. Thankfully, the IndyBest team is on hand, with a live blog bringing you all of the latest news on Xbox restocks right across the UK.

If you’re in the market for an Xbox series X, head over to our live blog for your best chance of securing a console. As ever, the cheaper, smaller and less powerful Xbox series S is in stock at Game, Very, Argos and most other retailers, ready to buy right now.

PS5 price UK

11:02 , Jasper Pickering

As we’re sure you are all aware by now, Sony makes two versions of the PlayStation 5. The PS5 digital edition is priced at £349.99, while the regular PS5, which includes a disc drive, costs £449.99. The latter is the same as the Xbox series X, while the less powerful Xbox series S (which also lacks a disc drive) undercuts the digital PS5, at £249.

But many retailers, including Game, Very, Argos, ShopTo and Ace Studio, like to sell their PS5 stock in bundles. This often means spending more but getting extras like a second controller, a selection of games and other accessories. Bundles tend to be easier to get hold of, but you’ll end up spending more money than when buying the console on its own.

The best 4K TV for your new PS5

10:39 , Jasper Pickering

While we wait for the next PS5 restock, it’s time to think about upgrading your television. The PS5 outputs video at 4K resolution and can even handle games running at 120 frames per second. That’s something not all TVs can manage, so if you want to see your new console running at its best, a new TV could be worthwhile.

We’ve rounded up nine of the best 4K TVs available right now, from manufacturers including Samsung, LG, Sony and Panasonic, among others. And the great news is you don’t need to spend a fortune to get a great 4K television – prices of our favourites start at under £400.

Can you get a VPN on the PS5?

10:20 , Jasper Pickering

While Sony doesn’t allow any VPN apps like NordVPN or ExpressVPN to be downloaded from the PlayStation Store (VPNs aren’t supported on the platform at all), there’s still a way to use a VPN on the PS5 if you want to stream geo-restricted content.

We’d recommend getting a VPN which has the Smart DNS feature. It’s a service provided by a number of VPN firms, including NordVPN, allowing you to spoof your location on devices that don’t have VPN support.

You can read our round-up of the best VPNs for more information.

Can you play VR on the PS5?

10:01 , Jasper Pickering

If you already own a PS VR headset then you will need to get an adaptor for it to be useable on the Playstation 5. You can order one from Sony directly through this website.

If you were following Playstation at the recent CES 2022 event in Las Vegas, you will know that Sony has officially announced the name of its new virtual reality headset as the ‘PSVR 2’.

‘Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart’ PS5 review

09:44 , Jasper Pickering

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is one of our favourite games of 2021 and won a spot in our round-up of the best PS5 games.

“Rift Apart has charm to burn, in its character design, lively combat mechanics, and explorable levels that feel large without seeming maze-like, busy without being cluttered,” our writer said in their review. “This is one of the best looks yet at what the new console generation has to offer. It’s big, it’s bright, and it’s almost impossible not to love”.

The game is currently on sale at Amazon.co.uk for £48.99 down from £59.99.

New PS5 stock predicted to drop at Argos 25-28 January

09:28 , Jasper Pickering

We’re seeing credible predictions about imminent stock availability from Argos in two week’s time.

Twitter account @PS5StockAlertUK has stated that there will be availability for both disc and digital versions of the console and will likely be appearing online at 8am between 25 - 28 January for click and collect.

Make sure you get those dates in your diaries.

Can PS5 storage be expanded?

09:15 , Jasper Pickering

After almost a year, Sony is letting gamers expand their PlayStation 5’s internal storage with the installation of an M.2 SSD. If you’re looking to expand your PS5’s storage, then we recommend the Seagate firecuda 530, which comes with a heatsink. It costs £175 (Currys.co.uk).

“A cooling structure, like a heatsink, is something all PS5-compatible SSDs require in order to work correctly, and it’s nice that you don’t have to do a hatchet jot of installing your own with this Seagate model,” our writer said in their review. “The firecuda 530 lets you conveniently download, copy and launch PS5 and PS4 games straight from the internal storage, as well as media apps like Plex. Transfer speeds are blazing fast as well, with Seagate saying that it delivers speeds of up to 7,000MB/s.”

Can you order a PS5 from Playstation Direct?

08:53 , Jasper Pickering

Customers can order a PS5 directly from Sony through the PS Direct site. We saw plenty of stock drops in December to make up for the Christmas demand but nothing yet in January.

When Playstation Direct does have stock available, customers will receive a unique ID in the waiting room to help deter scalpers, so it’s a good one to keep an eye on.

Should you get the Sony 3D pulse headset?

08:39 , Jasper Pickering

One of the bundles available from the BT store includes an extra controller and the pulse 3D wireless headset for £598.98. If you want to make use of the PS5’s 3D audio capabilities then the headset is a great option.

Our reviewer said: “Made with certain PlayStation 5 games in mind, its 3D audio means you can feel fully immersed in the experience, feeling like things are truly happening all around you.”

Morning everyone and welcome back to the Playstation 5 stock tracker. We’ll be keeping you all posted about any developments. There’s still plenty of bundles available over at BT, which have been there for most of the week, but we’ll be keeping an eye on some of the other retailers that don’t require you to have an access code to see if they are likely to make any moves soon.

As ever, we’ll be back again tomorrow and you’ll read about the very latest UK PS5 restocking news here as soon as we have it.

Best PS5 games

Thursday 13 January 2022 15:28 , Alistair Charlton

Congrats to anyone who managed to buy the PS5 at BT today. With the console now on its way, you’re probably going to want to buy some games to go with your new machine. We’ve got a round-up of the best PS5 games for you to peruse.

In the bestselling Spider-Man: Miles Morales game (£44.99, Currys.co.uk), Peter Parker is replaced with his awkward teenage protégé, Miles Morales. A next-generation spin-off, Spider-Man: Miles Morales refines the original’s formula,” our reviewer said. “This is a streamlined adventure with a more focused story, far less busy work and an endearingly clumsy protagonist still getting to grips with his powers.”

Meanwhile, Demon’s Souls (£57.99, Currys.co.uk) on PS5 is a showcase of what the new console is capable of. “The oppressive gothic architecture, yawning arches and festering dungeons of this cult classic look spectacular on the new hardware, while remaining faultlessly faithful to the aesthetic and vibe of the original game,” our tester said.

How to get a PS5 voucher code from BT

Thursday 13 January 2022 14:30 , Alistair Charlton

BT is giving its customers a helping hand when it comes to securing a PS5. Instead of throwing open the virtual doors and dealing with a stampede like other retailers, BT sends out unique voucher codes to its customers.

If you are a BT TV customer, for example, or subscribe to BT Sport, you can apply to receive a PS5 voucher code. These are emailed out sporadically and can be used to access a PS5 next time the BT store has a restock. You still have to pay the regular price, of course, but this system is a neat way of rewarding BT customers and giving them a better chance of securing a console.

How big is the PS5?

Thursday 13 January 2022 13:03 , Alistair Charlton

Not as strange a question as you might think, because the PS5 is massive. It’s often an easy joke to say how big the next generation of game consoles are, ever since the chunky original Xbox arrived, followed by the even bigger PS4.

But, while the Xbox series X is also rather large, it’s the PS5 that is least likely to fit under your television. The digital edition is slightly slimmer, due to not having a disc drive, but both consoles are equally tall when stood on end.

They are 390mm tall and 260mm deep, while the disc edition is 104mm thick and the digital edition is 92mm. Both consoles are intended to be stood upright, but also come with a plastic stand to help them rest on their side – likely the only way most buyers will fit the console under their TV.

If you fancy buying an Xbox series X instead, then we have some good news for you. The Microsoft console and arch PS5 rival is available to buy right now, via the Xbox All Access pay-monthly programme, at Smyths Toys and Asda. It’s also available on a pay-monthly basis for EE customers, too.

Is Currys due a PS5 restock?

Thursday 13 January 2022 10:39 , Alistair Charlton

Currys had loads of PS5 restocks through December – no fewer than eight, according to our records – but all has been quiet ever since. Currys is one of many retailers who came up with the goods in the run-up to Christmas, but the restock on 28 December was its last.

We’re almost half-way through January now, with no sign of consoles coming back into stock at Currys. That said, they tend to arrive out of the blue, so hopefully the situation will improve again soon.

Can you buy a PS5 on the high street?

Thursday 13 January 2022 10:10 , Alistair Charlton

Stock is currently as limited in-store as it is online. Usually we see the odd console being offered in branches of Game and Smyths Toys, but so far today there is no stock to be seen.

That said, these consoles come up for sale at very short notice (and disappear again just as quickly). Game stores use their Twitter accounts to tweet about PS5 (and Xbox series X) stock, and you can keep an eye on every account at once with this Twitter list.

Smyths Toys has a tool on its website for showing PS5 stock at all of its stores. But, again, there are none available at the time of writing. Keep refreshing that page and crossing your fingers...

What’s the difference between the two models of PS5?

Thursday 13 January 2022 09:30 , Alistair Charlton

 (Sony)
(Sony)

Sony sells two versions of the PS5. These are known as the disc edition and the digital edition. They have the same performance, design and technical specifications, but the digital edition does not have a disc drive. This means games can only be played by downloading them, and obviously there’s no way to play DVDs or Blu-ray movies.

The digital edition is also cheaper, at £359.99 compared to £449.99 for the disc edition.

Can you buy a PS5 directly from Sony?

Thursday 13 January 2022 09:15 , Alistair Charlton

Sony launched its PlayStation Direct online store in the UK towards the end of 2021. We saw five console restocks in November, followed by four in December with the last happening about a week before Christmas. Sadly, we haven’t seen any more consoles since. The PS Direct website says both versions of the PS5 are out of stock, with no indication of when more will arrive.

Can you buy a PS5 from EE?

Thursday 13 January 2022 09:05 , Alistair Charlton

Sort of, yes. But not right now.

Yeah, EE is yet another retailer with no PS5 stock to share at the moment. The network last had consoles available on 5 and 6 January, making it one of the very few places to have had a PS5 restock in 2022. Instead of selling the consoles in the usual manner, EE offers the PS5 to customers by adding it to their monthly bill and spreading the cost over two years.

Does Game have any PS5 stock?

Thursday 13 January 2022 08:45 , Alistair Charlton

The short answer here is: no. Like most other retailers, Game doesn’t have any PS5 consoles to buy at the moment. It feels like every retailer exhausted themselves over Christmas and hasn’t quite go back into shape yet. We can relate.

Game last had consoles on a multi-day restock between 23 and 31 December. An heroic performance, we’re sure you’ll agree. But it’s mid-January now and Christmas money is waiting to be spent. Game’s website simply says both versions of the PS5 console are out of stock, with no sign of when they will return.

When will the PS5 be in stock at Smyths Toys?

Thursday 13 January 2022 08:34 , Alistair Charlton

We’re used to stocking coming and going at Smyths Toys, but while consoles don’t hang around for long, the website usually reassures gamers that more will be on the way soon.

Sadly, that isn’t currently the case. The website usually says more stock is due in the current or subsequent month. But we’re almost half-way through January and the site just says, vaguely: “Expected in stock: TBC 2022”. This is far from ideal, and we hope the situation changes soon.

The PS5 is still in stock at BT

Thursday 13 January 2022 08:29 , Alistair Charlton

We’re now into the fourth day of PS5 consoles being available at the online BT shop, exclusively for BT customers. You can’t buy the console on its own, but there are three bundles available and prices start at £498.99.

For that, you can buy the disc edition console with a 12-month PS Plus membership (Bt.com), giving you access to online play. The other Two PS5 bundles are the PS5 disc edition bundle with an extra controller (£508.99, Bt.com) and a PS5 disc edition bundle with an extra controller and a pulse 3D wireless headset (£598.98, Bt.com).

Good morning

Thursday 13 January 2022 08:14 , Alistair Charlton

Good morning and welcome back to the PS5 liveblog. We begin with good news today, as the console is STILL in stock at BT. The console has been available as part of several bundles, priced from £498.99, since Monday and a whole three days later it’s still there, ready to buy right now.

If you’re a BT customer, you’ll need to get yourselves an access code first. To get a code, you have to navigate over to your MyBT portal, log in and head to the “Your Offers” section.

Other than that, however, January is continuing to be a very quiet month for PS5 restocks. We’re keeping our fingers crossed that the situation will change, and as ever we’ll be the first to let you know.

A recap of today’s PS5 restocks

Wednesday 12 January 2022 17:05 , Alex Lee

Righty-ho! Another day, another BT restock. We can’t quite believe that the only place you’ve been able to get the PS5 this entire week is the BT Shop.

There are three PS5 bundles still in stock. For £498.99, you can buy the disc edition console with a 12-month PS Plus membership (Bt.com), giving you access to online play. The other Two PS5 bundles are the PS5 disc edition bundle with an extra controller (£508.99, Bt.com) and a PS5 disc edition bundle with an extra controller and a pulse 3D wireless headset (£598.98, Bt.com).

We’re desperately hoping that it’s going to change tomorrow, but this has certainly been one of the worst months for restocks in a while. Join us back here tomorrow where we’ll be pleading for a different retailer to drop stock. G’night for now!

PS5 vs Xbox series X

Wednesday 12 January 2022 15:20 , Alex Lee

Stuck on which console to choose? The Independent’s technology editor, Andrew Griffin, weighed in with his comparative review of both consoles when they were first released, and it’s well worth a read if you’re struggling to decide.

“Both the Xbox and the PlayStation are stunning improvements on their previous generation,” he wrote. “Games load in a snap; the graphics, resolution and framerates are beautiful and the worlds look set to be more expansive and detailed than ever before.”

To find out his verdict, read his comparison of the PS5 and Xbox series X below.

Will PlayStation State of Play take place next month?

Wednesday 12 January 2022 14:30 , Alex Lee

According to video games insider Tom Henderson, the next PlayStation State of Play event is set to take place in February next month, and it could be a big one, unlike previous State of Play events. This timeline lines up neatly with the Horizon Forbidden West release date as well.

The rumour mill is suggesting we might even get a sneak peek at the Harry Potter open world RPG game Hogwarts Legacy on PS5 , which has been continuously pushed back.

We’re also hoping to get our first real look at the PS5 VR2, announced at CES 2022 earlier this month.
