Paris Saint-Germain have made a last push to sign Dele Alli on loan before the transfer deadline on Monday, with the Tottenham Hotspur player expected to make a return to the matchday squad for tonight’s Europa League game against Maccabi Haifa.

Negotiations have so far failed to reach an acceptable deal for both sides but the French club have returned for one last effort for a player whom they consider to be of the sort of quality that rarely becomes available. PSG would like to sign Dele on a season-long loan and a player of his status would command a loan fee for his parent club.

The Spurs chairman Daniel Levy has so far not seen his valuation of one of Spurs’ leading players of the last five years matched by any club wishing to take Dele either on loan or on a permanent deal, and that is the chief obstacle in the way of a deal with PSG. It remains to be seen whether Levy will change his mind this time. Dele was first suggested as a potential part of the deal that brought Gareth Bale back to Real Madrid on loan – one that was eventually concluded without the Englishman leaving.

Dele has not been in any of Jose Mourinho’s last two matchday squads in the Premier League and against Chelsea in the League Cup on Tuesday but he is expected to play some role against Maccabi Haifa on Thursday night – most likely from the bench.

The 24-year-old has been keen on a fresh challenge and Mourinho has tried to maintain a good relationship with the player despite Dele’s exclusion from recent games. Speaking about him in Wednesday’s pre-match press conference, Mourinho said the player had been “very professional” and that he had “only respect for him”.
