What is the team news?

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been dealt a blow on the eve of Manchester United’s return to the Champions League with Harry Maguire ruled out through injury. Bruno Fernandes will captain the team against Paris Saint-Germain.

Maguire picked up a muscle injury at the weekend during the victory over Newcastle. He joins a growing list on the sidelines as the squad travelled to France without Edinson Cavani, Mason Greenwood, Eric Bailly and Jesse Lingard.

PSG's new captain, Marquinhos, and Julian Draxler should be available after missing Friday night's 4-0 victory at Nîmes and trained with the squad on Monday. Former United winger Angel Di María and full-back Layvin Kurzawa were suspended for that match but will return tonight.

Marco Verratti and Mauro Icardi are doubtful and, according to Thomas Tuchel, unlikely to feature while longer-term absentees Leandro Paredes, Thilo Kehrer and Juan Bernat have been ruled out.

What have we said about the clubs?

Ander Herrera, who will face Manchester United for the first time since leaving for Parc des Princes in the summer of 2019, has been telling Jason Burt about the move, last season's disappointment in the final and his enduring affection for Old Trafford:

I have the feeling that in this group you cannot make too many mistakes and as soon as you lose one game you are in trouble. But these are the kind of games you want to play in the Champions League. We have done something great and the experience of other clubs is that when they reach one final in the next few years they reach more. That says it’s not the only opportunity. We will be back and are ready to fight again and take the club to another European final.

Luke Edwards was at St James' Park to report on United's 4-1 victory but adds a dose of realism and cautions against wild optimism after they bounced back from their trouncing by Spurs:

Manchester United’s problems have not come against mid-table Premier League teams this year, they have come against bigger and better rivals, like Manchester City, and Seville who knocked them out of two cup semi-finals in 2020.They are, probably, still a team good enough to finish in the top four in the Premier League, but are they going to be good enough to get out of a tough Champions League group containing last season’s beaten finalists Paris Saint Germain and semi-finalists RB Leipzig? These are the tests Solskjaer and his players must pass to retain confidence in their ability to do the jobs expected of them.

What's our prediction?

Manchester United won a thrilling last-16 tie in the 94th minute back in 2019, a victory that pretty much confirmed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer would step up from caretaker duties to a long-term contract as manager. Without Maguire he might be tempted to play three at the back but any combination, however well Aaron Win-Bassaka copes on the right, is going to find the pace, guile and trickery of Kylian Mbappé and Neymar a handful. United should score but backing a first clean sheet outside the Carabao Cup would be unwise. PSG 3-1 Manchester United.
