Public Vote on New Name for Baby Rhino at Denver Zoo

The Denver Zoo is sharing daily videos of its animals to show that it is “closed but still caring,” including this clip of a baby rhino exploring outside for the first time on April 21.

The video shows the two-month-old baby rhino following her mother, Tensing, around the enclosure. The zoo set up an online voting system so members of the public could name the rhino, choosing from three names including Pemba, after the first Nepalese female mountaineer to climb Everest’s north face; Joona, the Nepalese word for “treasure” and “joy of nature”; or Talli, for “young” or “youthful” in the Hindu and Tamil traditions, according to the zoo.

The Denver Zoo closed on March 16 following recommendations by the CDC and the State of Colorado to limit large groups to slow the spread of the coronavirus. Credit: Denver Zoo via Storyful
