The Punisher might have only just dropped its first season a hot second ago, but we're already thinking about season two.

Hey, it's not that often a good Marvel series hits Netflix these days. (Sorry, not sorry.)

Luckily for us, The Punisher's showrunner Steve Lightfoot has been dropping a few hints about what's in store for Frank Castle in season two – or rather who.

Although Lightfoot might claim he's 'not even thought' about a second outing, his ideas for the show's next villain sound pretty well-formed to us.

"[O]ne of the villains I love is Barracuda [from Garth Ennis' Punisher MAX series]. I think he's great fun," he told The Hollywood Reporter.

"I also really like O'Brien [also introduced in Punisher MAX]. I thought she was always really cool."

Although Kathryn O'Brien doesn't have any superhuman powers like Barracuda, we like the sound of Frank Castle coming up against a woman for a change.

Mind you, Steve Lightfoot hasn't made any kind of decision on who will be the series' resident baddie just yet: "There are so many great characters there," he conceded.

"It's a very fun sandbox to play in."

So, does The Punisher even deserve a second season? Well, yes actually, as critics gave Netflix's latest team-up with Marvel relatively glowing reviews.

Sure, The Punisher might deliver an almost unrecognisable The Punisher, but we're kind of enjoying a different, yet still dark, take on Frank Castle.

The Punisher is available to stream on Netflix now.
