Quaint train station in exclusive beautiful village is Somerset's quietest
Freshford is the quietest train station in Somerset. There were 48,416 passenger entries and exits at the station between April 2023 and March 2024 according to the latest statistics for the Office for Rail and Road.
That’s fewer than in any other station in our county, but is more than a year earlier though when 44,094 passed through its turnstiles. Bruton was the next least used station in Somerset with 51,030 entries and exits.
That’s followed by Templecombe (79,776), Weston Milton (98,862) and Crewkerne (160,042). Somerset’s quietest stations are a long way from being the least used in the country, however.

Denton in Greater Manchester is the quietest train station in Great Britain. There were just 54 passenger entries and exits at the station. That’s the equivalent of just one every 6.8 days, making it the least-used station in the country.
Shippea Hill in Cambridgeshire was the next least used station in the country with just 70 entries and exits. That’s the equivalent of one every 5.2 days.
Ince and Elton in Cheshire was next with 86 passenger entries and exits, followed by Polesworth in Warwickshire with 118, Reddish South in Greater Manchester with 128, and Coombe Junction Halt in Cornwall with 140.

It comes as rail usage is on the increase in Somerset. There were a total of 12.7 million passenger entries and exits at stations in the county between April 2023 and March 2024. That’s up from 11.6 million a year earlier.
Bath Spa is the busiest train station in Somerset. There were 6.1 million passenger entries and exits at the station between April 2023 and March 2024. That’s up from 5.5 million a year earlier and puts the station in 77th place in Great Britain.
Taunton was our county’s next busiest station with 1.5 million passengers passing through its turnstiles. Weston-Super-Mare is next with 965,490, followed by Keynsham with 510,674, and Yatton with 474,468.
London Liverpool Street is Great Britain’s busiest train station for the second year in a row. A total of 94.5 million passenger entries and exits were made from the station between April 2023 and March 2024.
The station was named the top one in the country for the first time last year following a boom in numbers from Crossrail. London Paddington was the next busiest in the country with 66.9 million entries and exits, followed by Tottenham Court Road with 64.2 million, Waterloo with 62.5 million, and Stratford London with 56.6 million.
Birmingham New Street was the busiest station outside of the capital, with 33.3 million entries and exits. Manchester Piccadilly was next with 25.8 million, followed by Glasgow Central with 25.0 million and Leeds with 24.9 million.
There were a total of 1.6 billion passenger journeys made on Britain’s rail networks between April 2023 and March 2024. That’s a 16% jump compared to a year earlier when there were just under 1.4 billion.
