Watch: Brian May undergoes eye surgery to improve his sight
Brian May has been inundated with messages from fans after revealing he was having eye surgery to improve his vision.
The Queen legend — who revealed last year that he had to undergo surgery to fit three stents after suffering a heart attack — documented his procedure on Instagram.
He shared two selfies of him before the operation and another after it was all done, telling fans he remained conscious throughout the surgery and “didn’t feel a thing”.
The first snap showed May, 73, in a hospital gown and wearing a mask, with an arrow drawn above his eye.
He told fans: “One Vision! All prepped and waiting... for a little bit of eye surgery. I’m in good hands. No need to worry. All in a day’s work... it should really improve my focus - AND my stereoscopic vision. It’s a Piece o’ Cake... eeek !”
In the second picture, the arrow had switched to the rocker’s other eye.
“Actually it should look like this,” said the star. “It’s the LEFT eye that’s marked for treatment. A straight selfie (unless hooked up directly to a live IG or similar) doesn’t laterally invert your face - but a mirror does!
"Funny... why do I instinctively prefer the raw mirror image - with my face reversed left to right? I guess we are all so accustomed to seeing our faces in the mirror that we get used to it. Maybe that’s why most of us hate most photographs of ourselves!!!"
May later updated his followers, sharing a picture of him with an eye patch on, which he joked was an “iPatch”.
“And.... all done !!” he announced.
“I really didn’t feel a thing. It was all done with local anaesthetic and a tiny bit of sedation - so I was conscious throughout the whole thing - and fascinated by this amazing procedure. Only about 20 mins.”
The star received plenty of messages from well-wishers after his op.
“It's fantastic to see you up and around already Bri! Speedy recovery from this point on,” said one person on Instagram, while another sent a “big hug”.
“I'm so happy that everything went well and that they took good care of you,” said another.
May has suffered a series of health issues over the last couple of years.
In December 2019 he shared that he had undergone surgery on his leg to help treat a “painful heel situation” and last year he told fans he had to go to hospital after ripping his buttock muscle “to shreds” during some “over-enthusiastic gardening”.
