Queen Charlotte costume designers talk importance of natural hair journey
Bridgerton spinoff Queen Charlotte sees the title character appear with her natural afro hair, with the show's hair and make-up designer calling it "important".
The series follows Queen Charlotte's rise to power and tells the story of how the young Queen's marriage to King George sparked a great love story and a societal shift, something that is picked up in Bridgerton.
The Ton sees a diverse cast of characters, and therefore particular aspects of those characters need to be highlighted, and this is why Queen Charlotte sporting her natural hair is important.
"We all agreed that it would be a journey," hair and make-up designer Nic Collins told The Hollywood Reporter. "She's not coming in as this big personality with these large wigs. She starts with natural hair.
"She's in a foreign land, she's in an arranged marriage that she doesn't want to be in. It must have been terrifying for her. Those were the things we were considering."
"We wanted to show the afro and its beauty," Collins added. "That was important. It's her decision, it's her choice. It's like she's just let her hair down and it sits in its glory."

Digital Spy loved the Bridgerton prequel proclaiming that: "It lives up to its promise and then some", but there is one element that this first spin-off has failed to get right.
Queen Charlotte has failed, where its original series also missed out on, with the absence of a real queer relationship.
While we do adore that Brimsley and Reynolds have a cheeky rendezvous, their relationship is never presented as just as important as the heterosexual ones.
Bridgerton seasons 1-2 are streaming now on Netflix. Season 3 is in production. Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story is due to premiere on May 4, 2023.
