What do you give your spouse of 70 years for a wedding anniversary gift?

Well, if you’re the Queen the options are rather limitless. Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary on Monday and to celebrate, she appointed Philip the Knight Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order.

A lot of titles yes, but this is an honour which recognises distinguished personal service to her majesty.

“Her Majesty has appointed His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh to be a Knight Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order (GCVO),” the Royal Family’s official Twitter account revealed.

“Awards in the Royal Victorian Order are made personally by The Queen, for services to the Sovereign.”

The world’s longest-reigning monarch and the Duke of Edinburgh met at a royal wedding in 1934 when the Queen was just eight years old and then again in 1939 when the she was 13 – and she says she’s been in love with him ever since.

On their Golden wedding anniversary in 1997, Philip revealed: “I think the main lesson that we have learnt is that tolerance is the one essential ingredient of any happy marriage.

“It may not be quite so important when things are going well, but it is absolutely vital when the going gets difficult.

“You can take it from me that the Queen has the quality of tolerance in abundance.”

In 1997, the Queen said of Philip: “He has, quite simply, been my strength and stay all these years, and I, and his whole family, and this and many other countries, owe him a debt greater than he would ever claim, or we shall ever know.”

A love story spanning nearly 80 years is an incredible feat for any couple, so congrats team.
