The Queen has been photographed out riding in the grounds of Windsor Castle over the weekend, her first public appearance since the coronavirus lockdown began in the UK at the end of March.

Her Majesty was pictured riding one of her favourite horses – a 14-year-old Fell Pony called Balmoral Fern. She is an avid rider and racing horse breeder and is often spotted out riding at her country residences, so it's no surprise she has chosen to indulge one of her favourite hobbies as the lockdown eases in England.

In the photos taken by a Press Association photographer with her permission, she's wearing a tweed jacket and a bright pink headscarf with her usual riding attire.

The Queen, who turned 94 in lockdown, has made Windsor Castle her home since the British government announced the lockdown measures on 23rd March.

The last public photograph of the monarch was taken through the window of an official car as she was driven from Buckingham Palace, with two of her corgis, to Windsor in Berkshire on 19th March.

Prince Philip, 98, has also left Buckingham Palace and is shielding with her, and a small number of staff, at what is said to be the Queen's favourite royal residence.

Although all face-to-face engagements have been cancelled, she continues to hold her weekly meeting with the Prime Minister on the phone and stay in touch with family, including Prince Harry, Meghan Markle and baby Archie in LA, via Zoom.

She has also given two televised addresses during the pandemic; one to reassure the country that 'we will succeed' in the fight against the virus in early April and the other to celebrate the 75th anniversary of VE Day last month.

As yet it is not clear when, or if, the Queen will return to the face-to-face meet and greets she undertook before the pandemic.
