Jubilee – live: Harry and Meghan to join Queen for Trooping the Colour

Thousands of people are set to join street parties across the UK today while the Queen and her family will observe Trooping the Colour as the country marks the Platinum Jubilee with a four-day bank holiday weekend.

Events range from family picnics to a record-breaking 5,000-strong street party, while the Met Office has warned it will be a quintessentially British summer bank holiday with drizzle and patchy sunshine.

The largest party celebrating the Queen’s record-breaking 70-year reign is set to be Morecambe Bay’s Big Jubilee Lunch on Sunday.

A Service of Thanksgiving, lit Platinum beacons, a Jubilee pageant and a star-studded concert are also planned.

The Queen has returned to Windsor for the events after a short stay at her Balmoral estate in Scotland.

While the Queen has made mostly virtual appearances so far this year due to ongoing mobility issues, she appeared at the Chelsea Flower show this week riding an electric buggy.

Organisational chaos overshadows start of jubilee event

10:33 , Colin Drury

Organisational chaos has dogged the beginning of the Queen’s platinum jubilee celebrations with thousands of people blocked from seeing the Trooping of The Colour parade.

The Queen is due to pass down the Mall on Thursday morning as part of the ceremony. To mark her 70 years on the throne. But police and security have closed all access points to the route preventing thousands of people from getting a glimpse of the monarch.

In one incident at St George’s Steps, visitors momentarily feared being crushed when security staff forced close a gate as hundreds of people tried to get in.

The action was taken despite huge amounts of space appearing to be free on the pavements lining The Mall.

Staff at different entrances have repeatedly directed visitors to other entrance points - only for those to be closed as well.

One mother said she had walked two miles to St George’s Gate after being directed there from Green Park - only to be told to go back to Green Park.

“It’s outrageous,” said Mario Stavrou, a London hotelier who had come along to see the event. “What light does this show our city in? People have come here to experience this once-in-lifetime event - and they are being denied access with absolutely no help.”

Another visitor from Milton Keynes added: “I thought this was supposed to be a celebration for everyone. I wish I’d stayed home.”

Animal rebellion protesters disrupt Trooping the Colour

10:27 , Tom Batchelor

Animal Rebellion protesters have attempted to disrupt the beginning of the Trooping the Colour procession on the Mall.

The group are urging for an immediate transition to a plant-based future and rewilding.

A protester wearing a crown was seen running out and then being dragged away by police.

Beau King Houston, amongst those taking action, said: “The royal family has had decades to lead the way on a just transition to plant-based farming and has failed to do so.

“This transition is common sense and simple, we all win. 76 per cent of currently farmed land could be rewilded and absorb carbon from the atmosphere.

“This would restore nature, spare billions of animals, and present a solution to the climate emergency, all in one act.”

Queen’s outfits on display at Tussauds to celebrate platinum jubilee

A selection of outfits made by royal dressmakers for waxwork figures of the Queen will be on display at Madame Tussaud’s from Friday 3 June.

As part of celebrations to mark the platinum jubilee, Tussauds will showcase seven of the outfits worn by figures of the Queen throughout her reign.

Tussauds has created 24 figures of the Queen in total during her 70 years on the throne.

People turned away from Mall as barriers shut

09:59 , Colin Drury

It is not all smooth sailing for those wanting to take part, though.

Our reporter at the scene, Colin Drury, says there appears to be all kinds of organisational problems for thousands of people getting down to The Mall.

Thousands have been directed to one entrance, St George’s Steps, only to be told by security it is closed, and directed to another entrance three miles away – which was previously closed.

Barriers are now being shut despite hundreds of people crowded around.

Close eye kept on Queen’s health during busy Jubilee commitments

Royal aides will be keeping a close eye on the Queen. The monarch has faced ongoing “episodic mobility problems”, since the autumn, and now uses a walking stick.

Her royal physicians are also likely to be close at hand in case needed as the monarch, now just four years away from her 100th birthday, undertakes a busy run of appearances to mark her milestone reign.

Could street party road closures inspire lasting change?

Could jubilee street party road closures give people a taste for quieter streets, less traffic and an improved sense of community?

West Midlands Cycling & Walking Commissioner Adam Tranter hopes so:

Union flags and anthem renditions from the Mall

09:20 , Emily Atkinson

The scene along the Mall - lined with Union Jack-clad patriots - is one of restless anticipation, reports Emily Atkinson.

Dominating today is a sense of great love for Britain and Britishness, a sentiment stirred up by apparently unwavering devotion to the Queen.

The crowd is made of people from up and down the UK and beyond, and renditions of the national anthem are can be heard in different pockets as you stroll its perimeter.

Allison and Yvonne, from Redditch, and Rita, from Bromsgrove, travelled down from the West Midlands last night before waking up at the crack of dawn to bag their spot on Pall Mall.

“I was at the 1977 Jubilee. I was five in school,” Allison told The Independent.

“We got a mug and a coin. It was fabulous and to be part of it again today is amazing.”

Rita also made the trip down to London for the Queen’s 60th Jubilee.

“I didn’t stand on The Mall last time, so I want to stand there today and fly my flag,” she said.

Causing a stir today is the attendance of Prince Harry and Meghan, despite the controversy of recent years.

But for Rita, it is important that Harry attends the celebrations.

“They’re family. It’s her grandson. I think they should be allowed.”

Also looming low over today’s festivities are several notable absences from the Royal troop.

The sidelining of the Duke of York, in particular, is creating division among Jubilee attendees.

“I’ve got mixed emotions about Andrew,” Rita said.

“He’s a royal member. He’s been in the armed forces and served his country. And it’s his mother. So why shouldn’t he be at least on the balcony, if nowhere else, or at St Paul’s tomorrow?”

Mixed picture for bank holiday weather

09:10 , Tom Batchelor

The Met Office has said northern areas can expect a cool and showery start to the bank holiday on Thursday, before temperatures pick up on Friday, which is set to be the warmest day of the weekend.

Temperatures are set to soar to 26C in the south on Friday, while north-west Scotland is expected to be the warmest on Sunday.

Queen says nation can look to future with ‘confidence and enthusiasm’ in jubilee message

The Queen has shared a message with the nation ahead of her platinum jubilee celebrations.

5,000 to join largest party on Sunday

08:40 , Tom Batchelor

The largest party celebrating the Queen’s record-breaking 70-year reign is set to be Morecambe Bay’s Big Jubilee Lunch on Sunday, which is hosting around 5,000 people at over 500 tables overlooking the sea.

Official celebrations will begin at 1pm with a Samba dance down the promenade, before Lord Shuttleworth - the Lord Lieutenant of Lancashire - cuts a replica cake of the kind the Queen cut at the G7 Big Lunch at Eden last year.

Organiser Luke Trevaskis said the Lancashire seaside town is “incredibly proud” to be hosting Jubilee celebrations.

Smaller, cheaper, and more democratic: The future of the British monarchy

08:25 , Tom Batchelor

What does the future of the British monarchy look like, asks Sean O’Grady.

The short answer to that question, as we look towards the arrival of King Charles III (it sounds so strange, doesn’t it?), is that it will have a ruddy red face, a combover and be extremely well tailored, albeit with a self-consciously fogeyish sense of style.

It will, almost inevitably, be a time when the mettle of the man, those around him and the constitution he inherits will be tested, very possibly to the limit.

Britons dismayed to find out platinum jubilee has disrupted bin collection

Wednesday 1 June 2022 18:30 , Saman Javed

Twitter users have been left disgruntled by changes to bin collection days over the bank holiday weekend.

Part of the uproar is because there is no one-size-fits-all system in the UK for bin collections over the jubilee weekend.

While some local councils have announced their services won’t be affected, others have made collection days later or earlier than the normal schedule.

If you’re unsure how your bins might be affected, Maryam Zakir-Hussain has created this helpful guide:

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are due to return to the UK - but where will they stay?

Wednesday 1 June 2022 17:35 , Saman Javed

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have confirmed they will be attending the Queen’s platinum jubilee celebrations.

While some outlets have speculated that the couple, along with their two childre, Archie and Lilibet, will touch down in England on Wednesday, they are yet to be spotted.

It marks the first time the family has returned to the UK after Harry and Meghan stepped down as senior members of the royal family in 2020. They have since settled in California.

So, what events is Her Majesty expected to attend over the bank holiday weekend? Joanna Whitehead details everything we know so far:

Greene King pubs now giving away pints for free

Which platinum jubilee events will Prince Andrew take part in?

Monday 30 May 2022 15:00 , Saman Javed

There has been much speculation about which events the Duke of York will attend this weekend.

Prince Andrew stepped back from royal duties in 2019, and was stripped of his honorary military titles and patronages earlier this year.

In February, he paid an undisclosed sum out of court to settle a civil sexual assault case brought against him in the US by Virginia Giuffre. The duke has continuously denied all claims levied against him.

Buckingham Palace has confirmed that Andrew will not appear on the balcony during the Royal Air Forces flypast because the line-up has been limited to working members of the royal family.

The trifle is made with layers of lemon curd and custard, St Clement’s jelly, a mandarin coulis made with tinned mandarins, amaretti biscuits, whipped cream and finished with a jewelled chocolate bark.

Sunny spells and warm temperatures set for bank holiday weekend

Monday 30 May 2022 11:16 , Saman Javed

It’s good news for those planning street parties and other outdoor events, with the Met Office predicting that there will be “sunny spells” and warmer temperatures.

The unsettled and unseasonably cool start to the week – with some areas seeing below-freezing temperatures on Monday morning – will gradually give way to drier, brighter and warmer weather in time for the long weekend.

Met Office meteorologist Richard Miles told the PA: “It’s fine and dry rather than major sunshine, but good sunny spells. Most people should see a bit of sunshine.”

Miles said those planning to be outdoors should be prepared for all weather eventualities.

“You’d be unlucky if you had to use the umbrella, but take one just in case, because you can never know. You’re more likely to need the sunglasses than the umbrella,” he added.

Most of the UK will enjoy fine and dry conditions with sunny spells on Thursday and Friday, with some areas basking in “plenty of sunshine”, the Met Office said. However, those in central and northern England could see some rain.

“On Saturday and Sunday it’s looking quite settled, with most places seeing quite a bit of fine and dry weather again, with a risk of showers this time in the south east and east coast, maybe,” Miles said.

“It’s looking OK; good dry weather with some sunny spells.”

Jubilee bank holiday tube strike has been cancelled

Monday 30 May 2022 10:38 , Saman Javed

A planned strike at two London Underground stations over the Jubilee bank holiday has been cancelled.

Around 80 staff at Euston and Green Park were due to stage a walkout on Friday 3 June, causing the stations to potentially shut over the busy long weekend.

But the industrial action has been halted following successful talks between the RMT union and London Underground chiefs.

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan, said: “I’m pleased that the RMT has suspended their industrial action on 3 June. This good news ensures everyone will be able to make the most of the events in the capital throughout the Platinum Jubilee weekend celebrating Her Majesty’s service to our country.

“This demonstrates the importance of unions working with employers to find solutions. I hope TfL and the RMT can continue to work together on the issues raised.”

Culture minister urges councils to show ‘a little bit of flexibility’ for late street party applications

Monday 30 May 2022 09:00 , Kate Ng

A culture minister has urged councils to show “a little bit of flexibility” when it comes to issuing licenses for street parties to celebrate the Queen’s platinum jubilee.

Chris Philp was asked on Sky News about councils warning the public against hosting unauthorised platinum jubilee street celebrations.

Philp said: “I think it is fantastic we are celebrating the Queen’s jubilee, and I would just say to local councils around the country, including mine in Croydon, if you do get a late application, and maybe the deadline has technically passed, I would just say to the councils to show a little bit of flexibility, show a little bit of willingness to accommodate people.

“And if you are at all able to, you know, please do grant these requests, even if they are maybe technically after the deadline.”
