Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s first baby will be the Queen’s eighth great-grandchild when he or she is born in Spring 2019.

Just like his brother Prince William and wife Kate, the couple told the public via social media, with Kensington Palace tweeting an announcement on Monday 15 October.

Twitter has become one of the main platforms the palace communicate with the outside world, but of course, this is a relatively new concept for the Royal Family.

When the Queen was expecting her eldest child Prince Charles in 1948, there was a different approach.

The then Princess Elizabeth, 22, managed to keep her first pregnancy under the radar and according to Vogue, a statement to the British media from the palace simply read: “Her Royal Highness the Princess Elizabeth will undertake no public engagements after the end of June.”

The cryptic announcement came shortly after she and Philip returned from a four-day visit to Paris in May 1948.

The French were reportedly disappointed in Princess Elizabeth’s style of dress during the trip. She appeared keen to disguise her pregnancy in an array of double-breasted coats and skirt suits.

Prince Charles was born on 14 November of that year, near to the Queen and Prince Philip’s first wedding anniversary on 20 November.

When it came to Princess Diana’s first pregnancy with Prince William, the announcement was a little less formal.

The news broke on 5 November 1981 – just a little over three months after her marriage to Prince Charles.

A palace statement said: “The Prince and Princess of Wales, the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh, and members of both families are delighted by the news. The princess is in excellent health.”

Diana also reportedly spoke openly about her pregnancy to the media and Prince William was born on 21 June 1982.

Meghan is believed to be around 12-weeks pregnant and the palace have said that she is in “good health.”

Severe morning sickness (Hyperemesis gravidarum) meant that the Duchess of Cambridge announced her pregnancies early, for all three of her children.
