Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II carried out her annual visit to the RHS Chelsea Flower Show this afternoon, alongside other members of the royal family. This year for 2019, the Queen was joined by Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge who gave Her Majesty a tour of Kate's debut Chelsea garden, Back to Nature.
The royal family visit the prestigious flower show on the press and VIP day every year – a day which welcomes a host of well-known faces – before the gates open to RHS members and the general public from Tuesday 21st to Sunday 26th May.
The Queen has been a patron of the RHS since 1952 and visiting Chelsea and its 500 gardens, nurseries, floristry and educational exhibits is said to be a highlight of her busy calendar.
"The Queen missed Chelsea only twice, on both occasions for overseas state visits," RHS shows director, Stephen Bennett told The Telegraph. "Like the Queen Mother who loved plants and gardens, the Queen is incredibly knowledgeable."
This is a special year at Chelsea for the royal family, as Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge, has made her Chelsea debut co-designing the Back to Nature garden. She did so alongside the RHS and landscape architects Andree Davies and Adam White.
Kate was in her garden this morning, showing school children the many different play areas the innovative design has to offer. It aims to reconnect families and communities to the power of nature.
Kate gave her own family, Prince William, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, a private tour of her garden yesterday. The three children, who have been helping their mother collect moss and twigs to decorate the garden, looked to be having great fun exploring the space and playing on the featured rope swing. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex also have a connection to Chelsea this year through the CAMFED garden, a charity which they both support.
