The Queen’s Tea Supplier Finally Settles Whether Milk Should Be Added Before Or After Hot Water

From Delish

There’s nothing like a cup of tea. It can cure all manner of things. A broken heart? Yup. A broken ankle? Well, no actually. But it will make you feel better when you’re stuck at home with a cast on your leg.

For years, folk have argued about the best way to make a perfect cup of tea. And the main bone of contention has always been the business of adding the milk – should it be before or after the hot water goes in.

After today, there is to be no more confusion, as The Queen’s tea supplier has finally cleared things up.

Royal tea makers Twinings has revealed that milk should be added BEFORE hot water - in this case, before pouring in the tea from a teapot.

Stephen Twinings – the 10th generation of the famous tea-making family, which has been supplying tea to the Royals since 1837 – says: “When adding milk, pour it into the cup before adding your tea.

“This allows the milk to cool the tea, rather than letting the tea heat the milk.”

Alas, Stephen wasn’t very forthcoming with information on what type of tea Queen Elizabeth II likes as he says, “The first rule of doing business with the Royal households is of course confidentiality.”

But word on the street is that she likes a cup of Earl Grey tea with a splash of milk.
