Quentin Tarantino may be a massive horror movie fan, but the director has revealed that fact was often scarier than fiction for him growing up.

Speaking at PaleyFest NY last week alongside History of Horror’s Eli Roth, the director admitted that as a child living in Los Angeles in the 1960s, he was terrified of the criminals he heard about in local news reports.

“[There] was a police news watch where it would say, ‘These wanted criminals are loose in our city, have you seen them?’” he told Roth (via IndieWire).

“They would show a mugshot of some criminal and describe his horrible crimes, ‘He’s out and about. If you see him do not try and apprehend him. Call your local authorities.’ I’m like five or six and for the rest of the night ,that guy was bursting into my house and killing the entire family.

Explaining how nothing was more scary to him than the news, he continued: “Just before the Manson family started there was a serial killer running around Los Angeles killing people with a hammer. That guy was terrifying to me.”

Tarantino’s latest film, 2019’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, was set around the time of the Manson family murders, with a number of real-life figures from his cult featuring in the movie.

The director has previously said that he would love to make a horror film for his 10th and final movie.

Tarantino said on the OUATIH press tour: “If I come up with a terrific horror film story, I will do that as my 10th film. I love horror movies. I would love to do a horror film.”
