Cat put in solitary confinement for 'repeatedly' letting other animals out of enclosures

By Charlie Duffield

A cat has been sentenced to solitary confinement for letting other animals out of their enclosures at his shelter - and failing to change his behaviour after several warnings.

The repeat offender, named Quilty, was discovered by staff at the Friends For Life Animal Rescue and Adoption Organization releasing other cats out of the senior room several times a day.

It turns out Quilty has always been a delinquent, with the Houston shelter staff finding out he was partial to letting his dog sibling into the house at his old home.

Yet Quilty’s great escapes have only boosted his profile; an online campaign was set up to #FreeQuilty and you can even buy #FreeQuilty merchandise.

However, the shelter said the cat’s review with the parole board had failed.

In true Quilty style, the pawlitical prisoner ‘released himself’ anyway, before being returned to solitary confinement.

The shelter explained: "Quilty will not be contained. And he has no shame.

"Quilty loves to let cats out of the senior room. Repeatedly. Several times a day.

"We have since Quilty-proofed the cat room, while he took a brief hiatus in the lobby.

"His roommates missed him while he was banished to the lobby. They enjoyed their nighttime escapades around the shelter.

"The staff, however, did not miss the morning cat wrangling, so we’ll just have to agree to disagree there."

The shelter are sharing Quilty’s progress on a thread on their Facebook page, which at the time of writing has been shared over 18,000 times.

He tried, and failed, to escape through a window, and a video revealed him being chaperoned back to his holding cell after he escaped and gatecrashed a staff meeting.

Of course the door ninja cat now has his own Instagram account with more than 40,000 followers.

Quilty’s shelter describe him as a ‘smart, energetic, laid back fella’ who is unsure about young children.

His bio reads: "I do know that I like to open closed doors.

"When I see one it challenges me, and I work hard to get it open and I’m usually successful."

However, it seems like it won’t be long before Quilty’s door-opening, shelter-wrecking antics are behind him.

He’s currently on a trial sleepover with a potential adopter, who wrote: “He is the most loving and affectionate cat I have ever met!”

We’ll keep our paws crossed he finds his forever home soon.
