Raccoon Rescued From Sewer Grate in Massachusetts

A raccoon was rescued by officials in Newton, Massachusetts, after it got stuck in a sewer grate on August 1.

John Moore, who shot this footage, was riding his bike when he approached what he thought was roadkill. Then he realized the animal was staring at him.

Moore stopped and found a juvenile raccoon with its head stuck in a sewer grate. He gave the raccoon water and contacted the Newton Fire Department.

In the video, the Newton Fire Department and Waltham Animal Control can be seen using soap and water in an effort to free the animal.

Moore told Storyful the rescue took more than two hours. He said, “the vet tech did a little quick exam and gave her a mostly clean review,” adding that the raccoon “started moving her feet and legs.” Credit: John Moore via Storyful
