A train was derailed in Kent after it hit a bunch of cows that had wandered onto the track.

Some 70 passengers were evacuated from the Southeastern train after it hit the animals between the villages of Wye and Chilham.

Kent Fire and Rescue were on hand to help passengers from two carriages - that remained upright despite the derailment.

Jonathan Calder was on board the train at the time of the incident and managed to snap a picture of the carriage in front of him that was sitting at an angle.

Tweeting the picture, he wrote: “Everyone is fine but this train is going nowhere. Front coach derailed.”

Southeastern Trains also tweeted about the incident.

They wrote: “Following yesterday’s derailment at #Chilham, buses will replace trains between Ashford Int and Ramsgate via Canterbury West all day today.

“Where possible we advise travelling to Canterbury East for an onward train to Ashford Int/Faversham for a HS1 train at no extra cost.”

Someone may need to build a cow barrier…
