Forecasters have warned of even more heavy rain over Surrey throughout the coming week as downpours continue to batter the nation this weekend. Yesterday (September 8), the Met Office issued a yellow weather warning for heavy rain, which covers the majority of Britain, including the entirety of Surrey.

With extensive disruption expected, the warning came into effect at 9pm last night, and will remain in place for a total of 21-hours, ending at 6pm this evening. Further heavy showers and thundery spells are likely throughout the day, meaning this weather warning may see some revisions.

The Met Office has advised that, if necessary, it may be escalated to an amber warning on a local scale. Rainfall levels are expected to vary within the warning area, with some parts of the nation set to see less than 10mm of rain.

However, forecasters have said that isolated areas to the south of England could endure as much as 80-100mm of rain by the end of Sunday. After a week of already very wet weather, this could result in greater impacts than would usually be expected at this time of year here.

Considerable disruption around Surrey is expected while the warning is in place. This includes the risk of flooding in areas where rains are particularly heavy, alongside public transport disruption, road closures and even the risk of power cuts.

Such conditions have come as the result of multiple corridors of heavy, locally thundery rain, revolving around a slow-moving area of low pressure. Chief Meteorologist Matthew Lehnert explained: “Further spells of rain are likely to affect southern Britain this weekend, generating some localised impacts on Saturday night and Sunday.

“We currently have a yellow weather warning for rain in place, and there’s potential for further updates over the weekend.” Here in Surrey, heavy showers are expected to sweep across the county from the early afternoon onward and into the evening, turning patchier by the late afternoon.

Overnight, conditions are largely expected to dry up here in the south east, making way for a cloudy start on Monday. There is then a chance for more outbreaks of rain across the region to start the week, before clearing later in the day to leave some sunny spells.

Temperatures will sit around average from this time of year, reaching up to 20C at points. Patchy rain has been forecast for Tuesday, with light showers likely for much of Surrey on this day, but this will again clear later in the day.

Then on Wednesday, a mixture of bright spells and scattered showers are expected, continuing the trend of wet weather. Drier spells could be on the horizon however, as the Met Office long range forecast for Thursday, September 12 to Saturday, September 21 indicates.

The forecast states: “Towards the end of the week and into the weekend it will likely turn more widely drier for a time, especially in central and southern areas, with the greater chance of rain and blustery conditions in the north and northwest. A gradual recovery in temperature is also expected as winds become more westerly.

“By the following week, while confidence is low a trend towards more settled conditions is most likely, accompanied by warmer temperatures. That said, some rain or showers are still possible, especially in the south and/or northwest.”
