Rainbow armpit hair is here to make your Pride month extra liberating

Following hot on the heels of last summer’s armpit hair trend - where women ditched their razors in favour of going au naturel down under - 'rainbow pits' have officially arrived, and just in time for London Pride.

The beauty brave social media trend, which involves dyeing your armpit hair so it looks like a multicoloured rainbow, was seemingly kickstarted by a hairdresser in Missouri on Instagram.

Caitlin Ford, who’s best known on the social media platform for her dreamy mermaid hair dye jobs, posted a picture of one of her clients rocking the body positive trend on her profile ahead of last weekend’s St. Louis Pride.

Instead of just dyeing the customer's hair, the savvy hair stylist also took the initiative to colour customer’s underarm hair in five different hues - calling her creation ‘rainbow pits’.

Showing the dyeing process on Instagram Stories, she explains that she started by bleaching the underarm hair, and then brushing tangerine orange, hot pink, lime green, neon yellow and sky blue Pulp Riot dyes onto it - before rinsing it all out.

The result is a technicolour pit situation any Pride march-goer would be proud of.

Despite it being the first time she’d dyed someone’s underarm hair, Ford told Allure that the armpit makeover was ‘fun and easy to do’.

While it looks like a bit of unicorn fun on Instagram, #rainbowpits is actually a continuation of the ‘free the pits’ feminist campaign, which encourages women to defy social norms in a bid for body equality - whether multicoloured or not.

The campaign, which was kickstarted last year, has gained attention from the likes of Madonna, Miley Cyrus and Lena Dunham.

Sadly, there isn’t anywhere in London that’s offering professional pit makeovers for Pride - so you'll have to attempt a DIY job if you're going to get on board with the trend.

But whether you’re determined to bust body hair norms or your face paint simply isn’t getting you into the Pride spirit, it might be time to put down the razor and give yourself the gift of rainbow pits this summer.
