Ramy Youssef shared the hilarious truth behind losing a ‘socially distanced’ Emmy award: ‘Almost worth [it]’

Losing just feels a little worse when you have to literally watch an award disappear before your eyes.

That’s a lesson plenty of celebrities seemed to learn during the 2020 Emmy Awards. Due to the pandemic, the ceremony was totally virtual, with the winners receiving their awards at home.

To make that happen, the Emmys sent “socially distant” representatives — who basically wore hazmat suits — to each nominee’s watch party, trophy in hand. As comedian Ramy Youssef learned, it made for some pretty unfortunate situations.

Youssef, who was nominated for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for his performance in “Ramy,” shared a video of his hazmat-clad trophy holder. After the award went to “Schitt’s Creek” actor Eugene Levy, Youssef captured the moment his trophy said “goodbye.”

“When you lose the emmy,” Youssef captioned his tweet.

The clip, which struck social media users as both hilarious and strangely apocalyptic, immediately went viral. Soon, other celebrities were sharing their own encounters with the award assistants.

As social media photos from actors like Hugh Jackman and Rachel Brosnahan show, the trophy holders seemed to be wearing a tuxedo-themed suit. That knowledge, combined with Youssef’s video, seemed to make the whole losing thing a little more lighthearted.

“That is almost worth losing the Emmy,” one user commented on Youssef’s post.

“Nooooooooooooo!!! If you tackle him its yours,” another joked.

“That’s a win,” another added.

Hazmat suits aside, the 2020 Emmys saw exciting moments for fans of shows like “Succession” and “Watchmen,” as well as the comedy “Schitt’s Creek,” which took home five awards.
