John Eustace has claimed Todd Cantwell wasn't where he wanted to be last season during his time at Rangers and will now be able to "showcase" himself at Blackburn Rovers.

However. he quickly poured cold water over talk of an instant impact at Ewood Park after he admitted the recruit was well off the pace fitness wise having been relegated to the B team before leaving Ibrox. The playmaker joined the English Championship side on deadline day after former boss Philippe Clement dropped the star from the first-team plans following a transfer request.

After leaving the Scottish Premiership behind, the 26-year-old appeared to be in line for his first Blackburn appearance this weekend against Bristol City but John Eustace appears to have cooled the hype around the playmaker going into the game. Speaking to the Lancashire Telegraph, he said: "Todd’s coming in with a point to prove. Todd is a top-class player at this level.

"He's been at Rangers for the last few seasons and last year probably wasn't where he wants to be. We will give him the opportunity to showcase himself.

"He's a top player at this level and I know he's very determined to hit the heights he has in the past. He has lots of experience, he's been promoted three times out of the league so we're very excited that he's here.

"Todd isn't ready to start. He's not had a pre-season, he is behind a lot of the lads. He's shown glimpses in training that he's getting fitter and we have to manage him properly. We will do that over the next two or three weeks. He could be involved from the bench, we'll have to wait and see."
