A convicted rapist is on the run after escaping from a South Gloucestershire prison.

Daniel Thompson, 34, failed to report for roll call at 4.45pm on Friday at Leyhill Prison, about 28 miles south-west of Cheltenham, Avon and Somerset Police said.

The public have been urged not to approach Thompson, who had last been seen at 11.45am at the facility, where he was imprisoned for breaching a court order after serving a 10-year sentence for rape.

He is described as being white and of slim build, 5ft 11ins tall with dark coloured short hair, brown eyes and is clean shaven.

He has a tattoo on the right side of his neck.

It’s believed Thompson was wearing a dark blue tracksuit when last seen.

The rapist has links to Chester, Warrington and Darlington.

Police said he may use the name "Gavin Barry".
