To find a valuable coin, you usually have to look out for pieces that are rare.

And the best way to do this is to find coins that have quirky details on them. This could mean scouting for coppers with a low mintage, meaning barely any were produced.

Alternatively, keep an eye out for coins that were made a bit differently from the others. That's the case for one 1p piece that's worth a lot more than you may expect.

TikToker @coincollectingwizard recently highlighted the penny in question. The money guru told followers to keep their eyes peeled for an 1882 1p from the UK.

It may seem pretty ordinary at first glance, but is different from other pennies due to a minute detail. And if you have one, you could end up making £280!

Contrastingly to other 1p coins, the copper displays a H mark beneath the date rather than to the left. It's hard to spot as it's so small, so you may need to use a microscope to check your coins out.

While one side of the copper coin shows the young head of Queen Victoria, the other depicts Britannia seated next to a shield and holding a trident.

The TikTok user explained: "The 1882 with a H mint mark is very valuable. But this does also depend on one condition, if you are lucky enough to find an uncirculated version of this coin, then it is worth over £280.

"I was lucky enough to find this coin in a pre-decimal coin hunt recently. Just remember the important rule with these pre-decimal coins, it all depends on the date."

The video garnered plenty of attention – and left many rushing to check their change. One said: "Find a penny pick it up and all day you'll have good luck."

Another joked: "I'm taking notes," while a third added: "Got one older".
