Find 'rarest ever 1p coin' that's worth £100,000 by looking for key date on face
Pennies are known to be lucky – and you'd be extremely fortune to find one of these extremely uncommon coins.
On TikTok, the Coin Collecting Wizard revealed a copper penny you should check your change for. That's because the "rarest ever" 1p could be worth an absolute fortune.
The creator told his 218,000 followers: "If I told you there was a penny worth £100,000, would you believe me? Well you should, and here is why!" He went on to explain how to spot one of the 1p pieces – and the key is to look at the date.

He continued: "It is the older predecimal pennies you need to look for. This penny right here is the 1933 penny from England, which is worth at least £100,000.
"1933 was an unusual year for British pennies. Why? Because technically they weren't supposed to exist. In 1933, there were already enough pennies in circulation, so the Royal Mint decided not to produce any for general use.
"But here's the twist – a few were made. Experts believe around six or seven 1933 pennies were struck for things like ceremonial foundations."
The 1933 penny features a left-facing effigy of King George V, designed by Sir Bertram Mackennal. Surrounding the monarch's portrait, the inscription reads: "GEORGIVS V DEI GRA: BRITT: OMN: REX FID: DEF: IND: IMP." This Latin translates as – "George V, by the Grace of God, King of all the Britons, Defender of the Faith, and Emperor of India."
On the back of the coin, there's a seated depiction of Britannia, holding a trident in her right hand and a shield adorned with the Union Jack in her left hand. The denomination 'ONE PENNY" is inscribed – and the date 1933 appears just below it.
Due to its rarity, the 1933 penny is highly sought after by collectors. The combination of its scarcity, unique backstory, and status as a "celebrity coin" makes it incredibly valuable.
The TikToker explained: "One of these rare coins sold for over £72,000 in 2016 at auction. So imagine finding that in your attic!"
However, it's worth noting that the majority of these pieces are held in museums or private collections. That means you'd have to be extremely lucky to find one!
The money guru added: "Don't get your hopes up, counterfeits are everywhere. Most 1933 pennies you see online are fakes. Whether you're a coin collector or just fascinated by history, the 1933 penny remains a piece of British numismatic lore."
