Marcus Rashford will reportedly start on the bench for England’s last 16 clash against Senegal on Sunday evening.
Rashford stole the headlines against Wales, with his brace taking him to the top of the World Cup goalscoring charts.
The Manchester United star and Phil Foden played alongside Harry Kane in a new-look forward line for the Three Lions against Wales, with Foden grabbing the other goal in the 3-0 win.
talkSPORT claim Foden will keep his place for the first knockout tie while Rashford makes way for Bukayo Saka’s return to the starting XI.
That would also mean no place for Raheem Sterling with Mason Mount likely to come back into midfield.
Further reports suggest Kyle Walker is set to keep his place, possibly ahead of Kieran Trippier at right-back, though there have been suggestions that Southgate could move to a back three rather than a four in preparation for a likely meeting with France in the quarter-final.
Rashford’s exclusion will disappoint Tony Adams, who had been hoping the Manchester United star could be used to exploit Senegal captain Kalidou Koulibaly.
Adams said: “As a defence, you have to make play predictable, you have to be solid and you have to work together, making sure there’s no holes, communicating with your keeper, your full-backs and your midfield.
“Koulibaly will get exposed one v one without the help he needs around him and that’s when the likes of Marcus Rashford can exploit him.
“I remember our old Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger getting us to do one v ones in training using the whole pitch.
“There was a lightning-quick Thierry Henry against me.
“I’ve got no full-backs or midfield in front of me and Thierry, with his space and skill, just went past me.
“I walked in and said to Arsene: ‘Don’t ever do that to me again. I’ve spent my whole career playing so I don’t get into that situation by working with the rest of the defence.’
“That was how I was so successful, making sure the unit was always solid and no one was left isolated.”
