Wanderlust divided viewers with its graphic sex scenes and saucy storyline as the BBC drama made its debut.

The racy drama, penned by Nick Payne, finally got going on Tuesday night, having hit headlines earlier in the month for being the “raunchiest show on the BBC”.

Wanderlust stars Toni Collette as Joy Richards, a woman who looks to reignite the passion in her marriage to Alan (Steven Mackintosh) after a cycling accident by deciding to open up their relationship.

As normal for a programme in the coveted 9pm slot, potentially Bodyguard aside, Wanderlust split viewers right down the middle in their opinion.

While many enjoyed the “fresh” drama focussed on sexuality, many found it “awkward” and “disappointing”.

One wrote: “Finding this #wanderlust boring and overhyped. Sex scenes over actual content.”

While another said: “This is the most awkward show I have ever watched on tv. #wanderlust.”

“Come home and hubs is laughing himself stupid at #Wanderlust I’ve lasted 10 mins. It’s appalling rubbish,” commented somebody else.

But there was already a lot of love for the six-part series, set in Manchester, after just one episode.

“Not sure if I just like #Wanderlust or LOVE it. Brilliant, clever, funny and very honest. Bravo @BBCOne,” applauded one fan.

Another user commented: “Crikey #wanderlust that's a corking first episode! With this #Bodyguard and #Press all on @BBC1 it's going to be a good September on the box.”

Wanderlust continues Tuesday at 9pm on BBC One.
