Explosives found inside mailboxes outside Saskatoon were fireworks: RCMP

Saskatoon RCMP say the explosive devices left in mailboxes in areas outside the city, some of which detonated and damaged the mailboxes, were modified fireworks.

Police say the fireworks will not detonate unless lit and are not a threat.

On Sunday, people reported several mailboxes near Sunset Estates, just east of Saskatoon, were broken into and "suspicious objects" left inside, according to an RCMP news release issued Monday.

The next morning, at about 9:50 a.m. CST, police received a different report of an explosive device placed in a mailbox on Range Road 3040, which runs vertically east of Saskatoon but within the surrounding rural municipality of Corman Park.

Police say nine mailboxes in total have been damaged.

Police say there have been no reported injuries.

They are asking anyone with suspicious or unknown devices found in mailboxes to not handle them and for anyone with information about the incidents to call Saskatoon RCMP at 306-310-7267 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
