Ready Player One is getting a sequel novel

Steven Spielberg's forthcoming movie Ready Player One is getting a sequel. Kind of.

The film is based on the 2011 bestselling novel by Ernest Cline, who recently revealed he has been working on a follow-up novel.

"I can't talk about it too much," Cline said.

"But there's no better inspiration for a writer [than] to return to a world they've already worked on when they're watching Steven Spielberg bring that world to life."

Cline revealed the news during a Facebook live event on Sunday (December 10), following the release of the movie's second (and Easter egg-filled) trailer. Oh, and after a suspected poster Photoshop fail.

Ready Player One is set in 2045 and follows trailer park dweller Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan) in a virtual reality world called Oasis.

When Oasis creator James Halliday (Mark Rylance) dies, Wade finds the first in a series of clues the creator left in a video challenging all users to find his Easter egg, which will give the finder half a trillion dollars and complete control of Oasis.

The movie's first trailer was also full of pop culture references, including '80s nods to Freddy Krueger, Back to the Future's DeLorean and, of course, the Iron Giant, who Spielberg says will be a major player in the film.

While it's not unusual to release a sequel novel after a big screen adaptation, Cline did reveal that he picked Spielberg's brain for ideas.

So, it's a pretty smart move all things considered.

No word yet on the sequel's title or when it will be released, but we're sure the blockbuster release of the original novel's film counterpart won't exactly hurt its sales, so expect the movie adaptation first.

Ready Player One will be released in UK cinemas on March 30, 2018.
