The real John Lewis has been revealed. He is an American computer science professor with the unfortunate Twitter handle of @johnlewis.

And after years of receiving near constant tweets from frustrated British retailer John Lewis customers, he’s hit back with a hilarious tongue in cheek Twitter ad.

As Lewis is serenaded by one of his students to ‘Bleak Midwinter’ he is shown responding to various John Lewis Christmas shopping customers. This is a particularly busy time for his mistaken identity tweets, as the Elton John themed John Lewis Christmas ad was released just days ago.

In the ad Lewis replies to multiple enquiries with the dry wit his replies have become renowned for. He claims to receive around 50,000 misdirected Tweets a year, and as his Twitter account shows, he replies to a fair few of them.

In the ad he’s even shown to have a whiteboard that includes American to British translations, and a list of certain John Lewis items that are currently in stock.

The witty Twitter ad ends by encouraging its users to “This Christmas. Join the conversation. Even if it’s by mistake. #Notaretail store.”

John Lewis says he’s happy to get in on the Christmas spirit and have a little fun with his Twitter fandom.

“I think it’s hilarious that people mistake me for the UK store and I do my best to direct them to the right place. I see a massive spike in tweets at this time of year and I always watch the John Lewis advert, especially as it becomes a huge part of my Twitter conversation,” he said.

“Hopefully people will be kind about my acting skills, I am no Elton John but who knows? Maybe I’ll get tweets about my own film this year,” he added.

And it looks like Elton John, the star of this year’s coveted John Lewis ad, is even in on the joke.

After Lewis admitted he’s a solid Elton John fan and had bought all of his CD’s, Elton John’s official Twitter account team responded with: ‘Thanks for for being a fan, John. We love your work too!’ for which Lewis replied: ‘I can now die happy.’
