Real Madrid have appointed Santiago Solari as their permanent coach until 2021 after an impressive spell as caretaker boss.

Real's 4-2 La Liga victory at Celta Vigo on Sunday night was Solari's fourth consecutive win as interim boss since succeeding the sacked Julen Lopetegui last month.

Spanish league rules dictate caretaker managers cannot be in charge of a club for more than 14 days. After that time, the temporary boss must be made permanent if they are to continue in the role and Monday marked two weeks since Solari was put in charge.

With Real struggling to land one of their preferred targets both before the arrival of Lopetegui and after his sacking, Los Blancos have opted to give Solari the opportunity to continue his strong start to life in the Bernabeu hotseat, giving him a two-and-a-half year deal.

A short statement from the club read: "The board of directors of Real Madrid C.F., which met today, 13 November 2018, has agreed to appoint Santiago Solari as first-team coach until 30 June 2021."

When asked if another victory had made him the favourite for the job full-time, Solari said on Sunday: "The important thing is to do what is necessary for the good of the team, everything else doesn't matter."

Real director Emilio Butragueno hinted after the game that Solari would be staying on at Los Blancos, saying: "The truth is that we are very happy with him."

Butragueno told Movistar+: "There is no doubt that he came at a very particular moment and has been able to achieve very good results.

"It was a very complicated game and we also had setbacks with injuries, (but) we had personality and character.

"We have very good players and the team is getting better and better, we took advantage of our chances and we are very happy, we must continue in this way.

"The line-up that finished the game is a clear example that we have a competitive squad, as the team has the personality to aspire to everything."
