Real Madrid star Kylian Mbappe is expected to miss this weekend's Madrid derby against Atletico through injury, according to reports. The France international could be out for up to three weeks with a thigh injury, with the prospect of Liverpool on the horizon.

After ending his much-publicised transfer saga in the summer, the 25-year-old has five goals in seven games with one assist following his arrival from Paris Saint-Germain. The Reds will lock horns with the elite European club once again in the new-look Champions League after Arne Slot's side was paired up against Los Blancos, a team who have beaten Liverpool in the final twice since 2018.

Mbappe has been in fine form, despite criticism from fractions of the media, scoring in each of his last four outings, including a goal and an assist in Saturday's 4-1 win over Espanyol. He was on target on Tuesday night, putting Madrid two to the good against Alaves, but was forced off in the dying embers after complaints of an issue with his left leg.

ESPN have reported that the 25-year-old will be out for up to three weeks, missing this weekend's showdown with Diego Simeone's side. Ancelotti confirmed after the 3-2 win in midweek: "He’s okay. He’s a little sore. He asked for the substitution to avoid problems. He is already very well and so are we.

"The team has looked for many chances to score and I think the team is improving and that is good for us because the schedule is very demanding. We have started well after the break and we want to continue."

And on Wednesday, the club posted an official statement that read: "Following the tests carried out today on our player Kylian Mbappé by the Real Madrid Medical Services, he has been diagnosed with an injury to the femoral biceps of his left leg."

The early indication is that he will miss Madrid's clash with Lille in the Champions League, as well as the La Liga encounter with Villarreal before sitting out of the international break with France. Liverpool welcome Madrid to Anfield on November 27 with no indication of whether Mbappe will be absent for the trip to Merseyside, pending any further issues.
