Chelsea will take a 1-1 draw back to Stamford Bridge for the secon leg of this Champions League semi-final meeting, but may yet be left wondering what might’ve been after failing to fully take advantage of a lacklustre Real Madrid display.
Timo Werner had already missed a glorious chance to open the scoring by the time Christian Pulisic did put the visitors in front after just 14 minutes.
Thomas Tuchel’s side were well on top of a Madrid outfit who seemed to struggle with the switch to a back-three, but the hosts equalised just before the half-hour mark thanks to Karim Benzema’s terrific control and volley from close range.
Eden Hazard made a brief substitute appearance against his former side and will no doubt be hoping to be back nearer 100 per cent match fitness by the time the two meet again at his old stomping ground next week.
