An immersive new show opens on Thursday bringing the art of Vincent van Gogh to life with animated paintings, virtual reality displays and even sandwiches inspired by the painter.

Van Gogh: The Immersive Experience is based in Commercial Street and has already been seen by almost one million people around the world, from Beijing to Barcelona and New York.

Visitors will learn about the painter’s life while inside a recreation of his home before a virtual-reality experience and 3D animated paintings are used to shed new light on his art.

More than 300 works will be displayed on giant screens with a specially commissioned soundtrack. Anyone left wanting more can go on to the Hotel Café Royal for a Van Gogh-inspired afternoon tea with treats named after masterpieces including his sunflowers.

Producer Hamza El Azhar said the experience, which lasts about an hour, was “totally different” to seeing the artist’s paintings in a gallery. He said: “What we wanted to was create an exhibit where people can go even if they are not into art and experience the work of the best artists in another way.”

The show runs until February 6. Tickets on sale at feverup.com
