Life-threatening flash flooding overtook St Louis overnight into July 26 after more than half a foot of rain fell on parts of Missouri, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).

Local authorities warned residents to stay home as water levels rose, leaving cars and motorists stranded.

Fire Captain Garon P Mosby of the St Louis Fire Department shared this footage of a water rescue on Tuesday morning.

As of early Tuesday, St Louis had measured 7.02 inches of rain in five hours, smashing the previous record daily rainfall.
