Overflowing recycling bins could be a thing of the past as the council is now collecting seven days a week.

From this month, communal mixed recycling bins are being emptied on weekends as well as Monday to Friday.

Collections every day will mean less rubbish left at the side of bins, making for cleaner streets and a more pleasant environment for residents and visitors, Brighton and Hove City Council said.

The council came under fire this year after missed collections meant bins were overflowing across the city.

Litter was strewn across the streets, including near Hove Town Hall.

Councillor Tim Rowkins, cabinet member for net zero and environmental services, said: “One of our biggest priorities has been to improve waste and recycling collections and this will certainly help do that.

“Collections seven days a week will mean less recycling piling up, being left next to bins, or spilling out on to streets and pavements which we know makes the city look dirty and untidy.

“More recycling bins and more frequent collections will create extra capacity inside the bins and make it easier for residents to recycle while improving the look and feel of Brighton and Hove.”
