Red card for Freddie Issaka means lengthy time out of action

Freddie Issaka will not have the chance to play another game for Plymouth Argyle until late September after he was sent-off in the closing stages of the 1-1 Championship draw away to Queens Park Rangers.

With the 10-man Pilgrims clinging on for a point in the first minute of added time, substitute Issaka went in at full speed for a challenge with QPR's Kenneth Paal and caught the defender with a raised boot he tried to get to the ball.

Experienced EFL referee Gavin Hall deemed it as serious foul play and immediately showed a straight red card to Argyle's exciting 18-year-old prospect, who will now have to serve a three-match suspension.

What makes that even worse is the fact that the first two-week international break of the season is coming up after the Pilgrims play Steven Schumacher's Stoke City at Home Park this coming Saturday.

Issaka will begin his ban when Argyle play Watford in the Carabao Cup second round at Vicarage Road tomorrow night. He will then miss the visit of Stoke and the home game against Sunderland on Saturday, September 14.

So the Wales under-19 international will not be available for another game until the Pilgrims travel to play West Bromwich Albion at The Hawthorns on Saturday, September 21.

It is a blow for Issaka, who has earned plenty of praise from head coach Wayne Rooney since he took charge of Argyle this summer, but he will have to put it down to experience, learn from it and be ready for when he can return to action.

Argyle also had midfielder Adam Forshaw sent-off in the first half at QPR as a result of a second bookable offence. He will be suspended against Watford but will be available for the Championship clash with Stoke.
