Bruno Fernandes will miss Manchester United’s trip to Aston Villa next weekend through suspension. The Portuguese received a straight red card in United’s Premier League clash with Tottenham Hotspur. He appeared to slip over before lunging into a tackle on James Maddison and making contact with the Spurs player’s shin.

United may appeal the suspension, but as things stands Erik ten Hag will not be able to select his captain to face Villa next Sunday (2pm kick-off).

Former Villa and United defender Ashley Young, a pundit for the game for Sky, claimed Fernandes did not even deserve a yellow card for the challenge, even if the slip meant he was "out of control". Jamie Redknapp thought a caution would have been a more appropriate punishment, even though Fernandes did appear to lunge at the Spurs player.

Villa face Bayern Munich at home on Wednesday night (8pm kick-off) before hosting United. Having only lost once in eight games in all competitions, Villa go into their second Champions League league phase clash in strong form.

Liam Delap opened the scoring in the eighth minute before Morgan Rogers opened his account for the campaign shortly after. Ollie Watkins put Villa ahead before half-time, but Delap ensured Ipswich would avoid defeat at home by bagging his and the host’s second with 20 minutes to play.
