Hollywood actress Reese Witherspoon has shared the recipe to the green smoothie she's been drinking every day for the last eight or nine years in an Instagram post - and it might just be the secret to her glowing skin.

Reese revealed that her Little Fires Everywhere co-star Kerry Washington told her about the recipe years ago when they sat next to each other at an awards ceremony, and she credits it for her strong hair and nails.

"This is the smoothie that I drink every single day and I have probably for eight years, nine years, I don’t even know!" Reese says in the video.

"But it has a lot of vegetables in it so I have this instead of breakfast around 10 or 11 o'clock in the morning and then I’m not hungry at all until 1 o'clock," explains Reese, who recently revealed she is a fan of intermittent fasting.

The recipe is inspired by celebrity nutritionist Kimberly Snyder's Glowing Green Smoothie, which has a 70:30 veg/fruit ratio.

Here's the ingredients list, though Reese adds that you can basically use any greens that you have in your fridge, as long as there is also something sweet in there so it's not too bitter.

Green Smoothie recipe

  • 2 heads romaine lettuce

  • 1/2 cup spinach

  • 1/2 cup of coconut water

  • 1 whole banana

  • 1 whole apple

  • 1 whole pear

  • 1 whole lemon (rind removed, but including pips for added fibre)

  • Celery (optional)

  • Almond butter (optional)

Though one pear, one apple, a banana and an entire lemon may seem like a lot of sugary fruits for one breakfast smoothie, Reese explains that this actually makes two portions, "then I leave it in the fridge so that I don’t have to make it tomorrow."

Once blitzed using her Vitamix blender, she then says you can add protein powder, almond butter or flax seeds to it.

So just how healthy is Reese's green smoothie?

Harley Street nutritionist Kim Pearson says: "I'm a big fan of smoothies. If they are constructed in the right way they can make a surprisingly satisfying meal and are a great breakfast option.

"Reese's smoothie is packed with green veg, which is fantastic. A moderate amount of fruit is fine for most people, but I recommend sticking to a maximum of two portions and making one of those fruits berries, as they're much lower in sugar than sweeter fruits like banana. Some brands of coconut water contain high amounts of sugar too, so be sure to check the label if you're using coconut water as your liquid. Unsweetened nut milks also work well."

Pearson adds: "Reese mentions nut butter and protein powder which highlights two important considerations - protein and fats. If you want your smoothie to fill you up and keep you satisfied then ensure you add in a good quality protein powder and a source of fat - such as nut butter, half an avocado or a tablespoon of MCT oil."
