If you're aiming to increase your protein intake, it's common to opt for protein shakes and bars as a convenient post-workout solution.

However, one nutritionist suggests that an item on your supermarket shelf could be even more beneficial.

Dr Megan Rossi, known as 'The Gut Health Doctor' has shared a better alternative of protein snacks that aren't packed full of additives.

The expert specialises in recommending foods that enhance gut health. In a video, she explained that while it's true our muscles benefit from protein after exercise—around 20g is sufficient for most—it's easy to resort to supplements that may not be gut-friendly.

She stated: "A lot of them contain extra additives that aren't great for your gut.

"Instead why not try these three whole food alternatives? For those who like a savoury post workout snack, I've got some canned fish". She then revealed that canned fish can provide a substantial 26g of protein.

Many were impressed by her suggestions for healthier alternatives, with one person commenting: "Music to our ears. I counted one protein bar with 13 additives in it! "

Sainsbury's Mackerel Fillets in Olive Oil, priced at 95p, contains 21g of protein. For those who prefer a sweeter snack, the creator recommended kefir and mixed nuts which contain 23g protein, or tofu for plant-based snacks.
